I was hoping the torpedoes would be driven by something like sour wine and baking soda... ;)

"Oh bother", said Pooh as he glanced through the airlock window at the helmet he'd forgotten to wear.

Thinking about this and other idea's then we only have one logical answer

steam powered Flying ultra-carrier

This should be able to deploy steam tanks and walkers, as well as submarines, aircraft and surface ships.

its the only possible way.

It will surely be disguised as a very large bird of prey in order to fool the orbital sensors.

Now, the canal from Salthar Bay to Silkiah isn't really suitable for ovean-going galleons with drafts of well over 20 feet, but you probably could get a few galleys through it. Maybe even, oh, I dunno . . . a few ironclad galleys with heavy, bow-mounted, shell-firing artillery pieces? Hmmmmmmmmmmmm . . .

SNIP .

Something has recently puzzled me about the Salthar Canal - why didn't the Dohlaren galley fleet in OAR use it for a quick transit to Tarot, instead of going all the way round Howard?

I've had a look in the past threads and this one sort of gets close [which is why I resurrected it]... is there any other textev or threads that might illuminate the question?

RFC said something about that being a demilitarized zone.

True, but I thought it was a demilitarised buffer zone between Siddermark & Desnair... I wouldn't have thought that would apply to galleys running under the COGA flag.

[Edit]
DOH - didn't search long enough. It was covered by RFC elsewhere in thread

Relax wrote:Freeboard has nothing to do with if a ship sinks or not in heavy seas. Well it does depending on how much floatation said ship has, IE water depth it can hold on its deck.

Its weather sealing combined with its dynamic stability has everything to do with sinking in heavy seas or not. Where its center of gravity is in very simplistic terms combined with weather sealing.

If your ship is 90 degrees to oncoming cresting waves you are hosed no matter how high your free board is. It should be noted that a higher freeboard = a larger sail meaning weathercocking of said ship and riding out said storm is easier to do. Of course get a storm blowing one way and the waves rolling the other which is not uncommon and then a high freeboard is a gigantic hinderance and undesirable.

A properly designed ship can roll well over 45 degrees degrees and be perfectly fine. Now the occupants might not think so...

Freeboard has everything to do with being able to battle each other in rough seas effectively. Freeboard has everything to do with the usability of said ship and its personnel in rough seas. Nobody is doing anything above class 7 except surviving.

The ultimate of of this is a kayak. Impossible to sink in bad weather. Not exactly very user friendly in bad weather though... How long can you hold your breath? I have been pushed under for over 15s before... It felt FAR FAR longer. I guesstimate about 15s and who knows how many times I rolled. Never been so scared in my life before. Who knows how high the waves were. All I know was that it was gigantic white caps and cresting waves in all directions. I'd say 25foot waves easy. Its hard to tell in a kayak, as anything over 3 feet is well above your head add in cross chop crests and well... Needless to say I went where the wind was blowing. Thankfully it blew me to the head of Knight Inlet with the wind coming out of the Queen Charlotte straight off the Pacific Ocean. 1st "beach" in reach on backside of an island away from the thundering surf and kissed terra firma.

A submarine is however totally immune from these problems if rigged for submersion - the issue is hydrostatic stability (the center of gravity is below center of buoyancy) and structural strength (how deep can you go without the hull collapsing or otherwise flooding due to hatch failures and exceeding bending moments by having the hull across two waves). The same principles apply for surface ship operation in bad weather - if it can survive being turned capsized (i.e. self righting) and is sufficiently strong then you have no problem so long as you stay off the rocks. (RNLI Lifeboats are designed on this basis).

The canal was not used in OAR because
the Church did not want to be linked
to the invasion of Charis.

The canal in Silkiah was set up to be
off limits in acts of war and using it
to quickly invade Charis would have
required the explicit permission from
the COGA.

No, it was only mostly dead.
Now, if it had been really dead, there would have been only one thing to do...
