I am looking forward to ordering the ebook the day it becomes available :)

No pre-order, though as I calculate my survival (I have some health issues) this year at about 20% and pre-ordering would serve no useful purpose.

I'll admit, though that reading both Safehold and War God snippets are keeping me entertained between Chemo sessions :D

I get nearly as much fun reading the Safehold forum as I do reading the completed story !!

I don't know why they cant offer the E-book at a much lower price than the dead tree version, since you don't need dead trees, ink or delivery services for them.

Money. Not paying for printing means more of the sales price goes to profit.

Also, I think there's a contract thing with the people who do the actual dead tree printing.

Need to take this up with Tor. Baen does offer the ebooks at a lower price than the dead tree version - typically about $25-29 for the hardcover, $9.99 for the ebook. The difference between the paperback price and the ebook price is usually much lower.

Amazingly, it's also that date on Amazon UK!
[bet they change it to a month later  ]

BTW what is this 'Sword of the South' book from RFC - I guess its from Bahzell series?

I suggest you pre-order the Kindle version. I got the Kindle version of LAMA from Amazon UK on the US publication date, a few weeks ahead of the UK hardback publication. It may even have been a little cheaper than the H/B I can't remember now.

I'm certainly going to pre-order the Kindle version. And I'll get the Audible version, too, so I can listen to it at work. But, unfortunately, I don't think it's going to be cheaper than the paper copy. Not sure who to be more upset at. The people who decided to add the VAT applicable in the buyer's location OR the people in my country who decided to have a VAT of 25 percent on ebooks when it's only 6 percent on paper books. Idiots. And the exchange rate isn't likely to be any better in September than it is now, either.

From my very, very, very limited understanding of the business model. The stuff you mention is a miniscule portion of the cost. Heck for me to print an e-book in a one off thing is like a dollar when I did such silliness.

True enough. But there is the cost of editing, you have to pay the author something, you have to pay the president of the publishing company, his secretary, the company lawyers plus all of their ancillary costs (Social Security, Medicare, workers comp insurance, unemployment insurance, health care, etc). Plus the building they work in, insurance on the building, utilities, etc. And of course he stock holders in the corporation expect to be paid something for their investment. All of this has to be factored into the cost of the book.

Yes, David could cut a lot of this stuff out if he self published, but he would still have to pay for editing services, and copyright registration, and about a gazillion other things that have both a cost in money, and more importantly from our perspective, time - time that he is not spending cranking out more deathless prose for our enjoyment.

Plus some poor souls ;) insist on dead tree versions.

It is much easier for the self-publisher to create e-versions than it would be for the self-publisher to create dead tree versions including getting the dead tree versions out there for people to purchase them.

Sure there's things like Print On Demand, but that drives the price of the dead tree versions sky-high. :(

You can find vanity publishers that will print trade paper versions of books for about $10/copy, in quantity 1000, but now you have the fulfillment problems - who are you going to pay to package and ship the books. And if you are going to ship to bookstores (like Barnes & Noble or Books a Million, remember that they expect a discount of 40% off of the list price (more if you are Amazon), and the right to ship any unsold copies back to you for a refund (and you are paying for the shipping). So instead you hire a fulfillment house, and pay them their fees, an pretty soon you find that you are your own publishing house - This way lies madness.
