Thank god someone finally got the joke. I always picture the scar just like the ones on Inigo (Manny Patakin) from Princess Bride.

I've anxiously waited for Merlin to ask someone if they had six fingers on their left hand when he was in the 'taunting' part of the pre-battle - I was disappointed it didn't pop up in the rescue of Daivyn and Iris.

Just for the record, I've been laughing since I read it... just didn't get a chance to post

For some reason not everyone has seen that movie which boggles my mind.

There are soo many good quotes from it:
Fencing scene:
Inigo Montoya: You are wonderful.
Man in Black: Thank you; I've worked hard to become so.
Inigo Montoya: I admit it, you are better than I am.
Man in Black: Then why are you smiling?
Inigo Montoya: Because I know something you don't know.
Man in Black: And what is that?
Inigo Montoya: I... am not left-handed.
[Moves his sword to his right hand and gains an advantage]
Man in Black: You are amazing.
Inigo Montoya: I ought to be, after 20 years.
Man in Black: Oh, there's something I ought to tell you.
Inigo Montoya: Tell me.
Man in Black: I'm not left-handed either.
[Moves his sword to his right hand and regains his advantage]

As a former fencer, I feel I must point out that where Inigo kills the 4 guards in 2 secs is one of the few places in movies where I've ever seen real fencing (finger and wrist movements controlling the blade) instead of stage fencing (elbow and shoulder movements controlling the blade) in all of moviedom.

Every time I see stage fencers flailing with a rapier, their elbows out and swinging their blades like a claymore, I just can't take the scene seriously. To have such opponents back in college, I would have made it past regionals. I enjoyed the PB fencing scene very much.

I will say that Basil Rathbone was the best fencer I've seen in film. It galled me to see him lose consistently to that hack, Eroll Flynn.

We all caught the joke. There just didn't seem to be any reason to comment on it--it was sufficient unto itself.

Three pages on a 'what if' topic about a minor facet of Merlin's appearance!

Folks must be REALLY getting bored around here.

RFC might need to throw the Brethren (and Sisters) here a bone and give us something to chew on for a while before things get ugly around here and Dukk has to flex his Almighty Admin Powers.

Agreed. I don't like seeing extremely flashy sword work or extremely flashy fighting, as i am always wondering why the smarter of the two fighters just doesn't do a short fast strike while the other person is trying to look cool, and then walking away from the now defeated opponent. all the tv-tropes rules regarding fighting apply here.....

I originated the topic, and I must say that I'm quite pleased that people found it interesting enough to discuss. I would consider my post a failure if people saw no reason to comment. (Having said that I have to confess that I didn't respond to The Princess Bride allusion because I thought I didn't have anything more interesting to offer, rather than because I didn't catch the allusion.) I try to put myself into the shoes (or birch bark covers) of different characters in the story and try to decide how their viewpoint would differ than what's been offered so far in the story. I think that it's entirely possible that Mr. Weber has considered the viewpoints I offer and decided it's not sufficiently interesting to include in a novel. Regardless, I think that it's interesting to discuss, and I'm quite pleased to discover that others think so as well.

RFC might need to throw the Brethren (and Sisters) here a bone and give us something to chew on for a while before things get ugly around here and Dukk has to flex his Almighty Admin Powers.

Of course...I hadn't considered that something I might say might encourage Mr. Weber to post a snippet, so with that in mind I retract everything I have ever said and claim that it's the only reasonable thing for him to do.

Well with a warrior as famous as Merlin has become, it must lead to speculation on who was good enough to actually get cold steel close enough to Merlin's face to leave a scar. Clearly this mystery person has done faaaaar better then anyone else seems to have done after several years and several assassination attempts latter.

I LOVE the notion of the different realms viewing "their" Senjin as the most likely party. I think it's a brilliant notion.
