Since my copies of Safehold are all paper text, I can't do a nifty word search, but I'm pretty sure that I recall Merlin speculating about what the "return of the archangels" could mean and rejecting a 1000 year cryo as technologically unfeasible. One could, of course, use relativity to shorten the 1000 years with a long near-light speed space flight, but wouldn't that risk attracting the attention of the Gbaba, the very thing Langhorn most feared?

You're correct. Federation cryo tech won't preserve somebody for that length of time.

However, IIRC David Weber has said that Federation spaceship tech can't reach high enough percentage of the speed of light for time compression to take place.

Also, IIRC David Weber has said that Safehold is far enough from Gbaba space that it's unlikely that the Gbaba would be anywhere near Safehold.

The earlier concern was about Gbaba scouts reaching the Safehold system while making sure that the Project Ark fleet hadn't escaped.

By now, the Gbaba scouts have given up and returned to Gbaba space.
