I just had a thought about application of this technology. I don't see any reason why they couldn't build steam powered excavators and work at building a Canal between Howell Bay and The Cauldron. Doing so would greatly reduce the supply lines for future steam powered ships moving between the Markovian Sea/Sea of Justice and and Gulf of Dohlar.

In theory it's a good idea.

In reality, there's a little problem. It's called "one hell of a lot of VERY big mountains in the way".

There may be a way to go around them. But at least in the short term going through them -- even with steam power -- is probably just a wee bit difficult. I think they'll need some explosives a bit more powerful than mere gunpowder first.

I assume it'd be a heck of a long tunnel to put a canal through a mountain range.

That said, steam powered rock drills would probably be a bigger win for tunneling than nitroglycerin or dynamite. Black powder is a lot less powerful, but I suspect the killer is how long it takes to bore the shot holes by muscle power.

Hi PeterZ

You mean Corisande, right ??

From a plot perspective, watching Alyk, Koryn and the artillerist (I forget his name) trying to integrate their more traditional forces to the ICA and commenting on the differences would be an interesting thing to read.

And if Young prince Daivyn and Princess Irys can turn public opinion around in Corisand its possible that General whats his Name (the Corisandian Calvalry Commander) could be leading a Corisandan Cavalry force in the ICA before too long

No, I meant Chisholm. Forgot which thread, but he chastised Lyonheart for making that assumption; that only Corisande had a colid core of cavalry within the Empire.

Hi PeterZ

OK, you meant Chisholm.

It's just that the other posts talk about Alyk, Koryn, and the artillerist (Charlz Doyal) are ALL from Corisande not from Chisholm.

Yes, it does talk about them. I discuss their integrating their Corisandian forces into the ICA. I would find that interesting, especially any comments they might have on the differences in the ICA's combined arms approach and their own.

Was I unclear in my phrasing?

Hi PeterZ

Sorry for the confusion.

I must have read your post with only half my brain fully engaged.

It happens more frequently as I get older :(

Thanks for the clarification.

Yes. It's called "going south of them". Due west of Tellesburg (and for some distance northward), there are no mountains. Take another look at your map. [G]

That might work or that way may be to hilly. Of course, now they can simply build a railroad. I imagine that would be cheaper to do. The Telesberg to Whitechurch line, first RR on Safehold. All Aboard!
