What I really wanted to see was Snippet #17--before I have to be offline for a couple of days.

Enjoy, everyone, I'm outta here!

Then use the trees from that forest to build rafts to ferry his troops across the river. Once across, he can slip into Silkiah and get to Dohlar that way. Of course, if he has someone like DE in Hot pursuit, this would only get him pinned to the river.

But otherwise there would be no one in easy range to engage him. I agree Ahlvarez is in no shape to be engaging anyone in battle.

Randomiser's suggestion about building rafts was pretty ingenious. With a little luck it might work. I agree that nearer to Thesmar might be the best place to try cuz mosta H's folks'll be up north with him.
I really would like to see A get through. RFC's built a really interesting character here. A Thirsk-Ahlverez duo in Dohlar would be a real plus for the long term plan (IMHO).

Agreed... if Thirsk is still with us. Remember that short little bombshell of a snippet a while back. Everyone seemed to think it was the same sort of thing we had with Hektor back in LAMA. Could be, but I'm not sure. This time it could be for real.

I don't believe for one second that Thirsk is dead. This is some ploy designed to get Thirsk out from under the Inquisition.

comes in. Bahrns explosives team is about to lay charges and blow the barge obstacles out of the way so he can steam further upriver.

I've just re read both snippet two and snippet 16. In snippet two we have
“That’s what they say, Sir. And I’m ready to take the word of anyone with big enough balls to even try setting them, myself. And the lieutenant in charge — a Lieutenant—” he glanced at the note in his hand, turning it to catch the lamplight “— Bryahnsyn, it says — lit all the fuses right on the dot at five-thirty.”

and in snippet 16
Lieutenant Ahrnahld Bryahnsyn stopped rubbing his hands together in a vain attempt to convince them they were warm and looked up, his expression baleful as he tried to identify the anonymous voice. It sounded like Corporal Kaillyt, who damned well ought to know better than to say something like that without identifying who was speaking.

I suppose it could be a coincidence that we have two LT Bryahnsyn's on opposite sides of the conflict, but I'm a little hesitant to accept it as that. Has there been any textev that the unit in snippet 16 is not attached to Hanth's army?

The heretics had punched a column out of the “besieged” port of Thesmar last month and driven southwest to take[...]

From the officer in Snippet 16's internal monologue.

Okay, that tends to indicate he is on the CoGA side, although he MIGHT have been referring to his own - adopting the label of heretics as a badge of honor.

Like the colonial army in the US singing "Yankee Doodle," which was written by the British to mock them? I see what you're aiming at, but I can't think of an example in the entire series where someone thinks of the "heretics" military maneuvers and isn't referring to the EoC. In this case, it's pretty clear that Lieutenant Ahrnahld Bryahnsyn and his troops in this snippet have been stationed by the sunken barges either to sound the alarm if they see enemy activity, or to prevent any attempts by the ICA/ICN to blow them up.

Sadly, the only promotion I foresee in Lt. Bryahnsyn's future is a rather sudden relocation to a better place - or a worse one if he's lived a particularly wicked life like Clyntahn!

"Oh bother", said Pooh as he glanced through the airlock window at the helmet he'd forgotten to wear.

In all probability, you are right. The most likely scenario I've seen here is that someone is planting explosives. If that is the case the poor guy is going to find himself at ground zero of a rather spectacular explosion.

Okay, I'll buy that.
With Cheryk lost, General Rychtyr had ordered the batteries at Yairdyn on the Seridahn withdrawn and pulled all but a token delaying force back from his main position at Trevyr. The Yairdyn commander had been unable to block the entire river, but he’d scuttled a handful of barges in the deepest channel, which had been enough to prevent the heretic ironclad’s passage at least briefly. There’d been another, heavier barricade twenty miles north of Yairdyn, as well, but the terrain at that point was flat as a table, totally unsuited to a serious defense even if there’d been some way to get enough men and guns there in time. The Yairdyn CO had kept right on retreating past it, using it to delay any riverborne pursuit, and it seemed to have worked.
Where is the line of sunken barges. Its not at Yairdyn, there's no one left there . Its not 20 miles north of Yairdyn, there's no one there because it is undefensible. It might be at Trevyr, although there is only a small delaying force there. It would appear from the map, that the next reasonable place on the Seridahn River is at Evrytyn, and that basically cuts off Alvarez and any hope he has to get out of the trap his army is in. Presumably when Rychtyr has to retreat from Evrytyn, he will do so down the Sheryl-Seridahn Canal, assuming that Hanth doesn't cut it behind him.
