That was an interesting demonstration. I remember a discussion a while back where RFC who has fired one of the things suggested a rate of aimed fire of about one shot every 10 seconds...

The guy doing the demonstration obviously wasn't attempting to reload in a hurry and just watching him, the process seemed a bit involved. I wonder if a soldier would have to take the rifle away from his shoulder to reload. That would seem to me to make a real difference in rate of fire.

Someplace there was a reference to being able to do something to the propellers to obviate this difficulty, something about raising them or casing them. However, that may have been a different class of ship.

That was in MTAT during that conference at King's Harbor right before Cayleb goes trotting off to Siddarmark. However that did not turn out to be the final design of the Haaralhds...

The actual King Haarahld VII class ships will carry emergency masts and sails, and since they're the biggest ships in existence, they'll be able to have more sails raised in an emergency than any ship afloat carries normally. Since they were expected to manage 6-10 knots with the engine screw raised, with two screws permanently lowered, their speed will be quite a bit less than 6 knots under sail. Fortunately they can kill anything afloat from beyond the range of the ICN's cannons, and those cannons can't breach their armor anyway, so any one of them ought to be able to limp back to a friendly port should it run out of coal or suffer catastrophic damage to both engines. (Which is highly unlikely.)

"Oh bother", said Pooh as he glanced through the airlock window at the helmet he'd forgotten to wear.

I wonder if their "emergency sail" provision is as powerful and complete as you describe when they very earnestly expect and hope that it will never be neccessary to use it.
