It might trigger a call to what ever lies under the Temple, waking up a sleeping AI or an archangel in hibernation.

Not to mention the environmental impact a bunch city destroying projectiles would have.

The environmental impact wouldn't be severe enough to stop them from trying. The possibility of a bell ringing under the Temple is more than enough to stop them. :)
