When your hungry enough you'll eat anything. During the siege of Leningrad and Stalingrad rats cats dogs even the animals in the zoos.

And unfortunately some cannibalism according to one history I read of the "thousand day seige of Leningrad," before the Russians established an ice bridge from the east across Lake Ladoga.

Actually, the Leningrad Zoo was preserved, by great self-self-sacrifice of its staff. That's why it is still Leningrad Zoo, while the city is now St. Petersburg; the current staff wanted to preserve the memory and honor of their predecessors.

Sorry for the digression.

I welcome that information and digression! Thank you!

I think that the Siege of Leningrad was the worst of modern history. 850+ days of little or no supplies is unthinkable except for the reality of it. With Stalin's active antagonism towards the city, even in Russia, the legend is under-appreciated!

Unfortunately yes. The city was starving, constantly bombarded, besieged... but it did not fell, despite everything.

Er... I'm not sure I understood: Stalin antagonism against Leningrad? I'm afraid, it's a myth. Actually, it was Stalin who demanded that the blockade must be broken as soon as possible - and Red Army tried several times to break the blockade in quite costly offensives.

It's probably true that Stalin didn't like Leningrad party leaders, but he clearly considered the city as vital part of Soviet Union, which must be saved - both by practical (it was one of the most capable industrial centers) and ideological (the birthplace of Revolution) points of view.

Oh well, if shortening the front is what the Germans crave,
Let's shorten it to very end - the length of Fuhrer's grave.

Yes. Unfortunately, this is true.

P.S. By the way, another Leningrad myth - that party leaders feasted during blockade. They didn't. They have better rations, but essentially the same as military officers (which wasn't much better than average civilians in Leningrad). According to the archived medical cards, health deterioration and exhaustion was stated to almost of all of city leadership - even Zhdanov himself was in really bad shape when blockade was finally broken.
