Does that really need to be spelled out?

I think so but David Weber might disagree.

How about something like,
"We can get you out of here whenever you want a nice, long extended family visit...no strings attached!" Don When any group seeks political power in God's name, both religion and politics are instantly corrupted.

Personally I think this will be kind of along the line of Daahk at the end of Children of Empire when he says "will there be a reply?" Basically it's a nice way to wrap up the book.
I suspect we will start the next book in a totally different scene and will only hear maybe some bits and pieces of this actual conversation between Merlin and Thisk. What will be more interesting is what will Thisk do with this new freedom to act?. Will he deflect? If so, how will that be accomplished? Or will he remain in place and work from the inside against the G4? There are all SORTS of possibilities for us to speckleate on. |

That seems a bit predictable. What if Merlin says, "Actually, you and he need to talk." And beckons one of Thirsk's son-in-laws through the door. I'm not saying there's a logical reason for doing this. I'm just saying that RFC is bound to surprise us. |

Concerning Thirsk's newly given freedom of manoeuvre.
I hope his attitude now becomes - ""My country right or wrong; If right, to be kept right; and if wrong, to be set right "GOLD! - It may not buy happiness, but it can buy you a better state of misery, that's for sure!" Count Duckula |

Thirsk is a man of his time and not subject to wild optimism. Cayleb and Sharleyan will promise that his family are not hostages, they will be sincere, and he will take it as a diplomatic lie. It would be a lie from any other ruler on Safehold after all.

Don't think this is on target. Thirsk has recognized Cayleb as an honorable man. Don When any group seeks political power in God's name, both religion and politics are instantly corrupted.

Thirsk is honorable, that's well established in textev. That doesn't mean he's going to believe anyone else is, especially a political ruler, especially a political ruler of an enemy.

We do have textev that Thirsk believes that Cayleb is an honorable man. We see it in his reaction to the news that Irys and Daivyn had been "kidnapped" by Charis and the tortures they would no doubt endure. To which Thirsk thought, "Not that king, not that man." |

Some thoughts on the good Admiral...
We know Thirsk has sworn an OATH to serve his king. He is bound by that oath to do everything he can to defeat the forces arrayed against him. And now that he's free of the concerns about the safety of his family, he will be able to concentrate even more on doing just that. Nor will he do anything that will harm his sailors. In fact, he now has two very powerful weapons he'll be able to use in a short period of time that could very possibly take back both ICN's island bases to relieve naval pressure on Dohlar. He knows he's still in Clyntahn's doghouse. Clyntahn might just decide it's time for him to have a fatal accident. And, he still has to protect Lt. Zhwaigair (sp?) and his group and the officers close to him who might be in danger from Clyntahn. I'd be surprised if this very intelligent and informed man were to say to Merlin, "Well, gee, thanks for saving the kids and I'll be sure to write." I would expect Thirsk to pour Merlin a glass and have him sit down and tell him WTF's going on in the world and while you're at it, why don't you tell me who, or, what you are? Somehow, Thirsk either comes over to the good guys or comes off the board to live quietly as a loving grandfather on a quiet estate somewhere outside Tellesberg. |
