That's my point, Don. The technology to build in the Terran Federation is as far ahead of us as we are ahead of Caesar. OWL's fabber needed raw materials and energy to make Nimue's PICA body. Yet in the Federation PICA's were hideously expensive. The same applies to fabbers themselves, compact fusion plants, mining bots and all the other geegaws of the TF. On Safehold if one has a fabber, the only cost of a piece of equipment are the material and energy inputs.
The dissemination of technology is only hampered by lifestyle choices once the demand for fabbers has been satisfied. On Earth many of the third world cannot afford the production costs and imbedded R&D costs in the devices of the first world. That's why Safehold will turn out differently. Nobody owns the knowledge on Safehold, the inner circle simply are the only one's with access. That will change soon enough. |

I bet to further this end, they will sell the equipment to allow other nations to develop their own infrastructure and industry, as the empire is susceeding from their attitudes and hteir innovations. Even with all the tech, the mainlands would need more than that even to begin to match the empire.
THe spread of tech will push the church in every way, so the empire wont need to break the proscriptions, the main land wil do that for them. THe republic will be hte first to develop. I can see hte church forced to adopt the changes themselves. Harchong will have to be dragged kicking and screaming. |

I can think of all manner of places that will have to be dragged kicking and screaming: Desnair, Sodar, North Harchong, Temple Lands, Border Lands except for Silkiah, and the list goes on... That was really the point of my earlier post. Don When any group seeks political power in God's name, both religion and politics are instantly corrupted.

That's an interesting idea. I have felt that Silkiah would be a good fit with Siddarmark given the similarities of their economies. The others? There certainly is the possibility of that happening through conquest. But even if it turns out that way, their outlook is deeply conservative and while Siddarmark may well be in control, it's going to be restive and maybe more grief for the occupier than it's worth. Even in military defeat the COGA is going to have a lot of support in the borderlands areas. "Kicking and screaming" might be a mild description of what happens in those areas. Don When any group seeks political power in God's name, both religion and politics are instantly corrupted.

Right. That is why Merlin is so intent on trying to cultivate the habits of thought that lead to modernization so they can do it for themselves... Don When any group seeks political power in God's name, both religion and politics are instantly corrupted.

It all depends on your goal. If you aren't making mistakes you aren't really learning either. --- Jack of all trades and destructive tinkerer. Anyone who have simple solutions for complex problems is a fool. |

This is also right. But there is a whale of a difference between making a correctable mistake that producing useful learning and believing that your mistake is in offending God who is telling you not to do this any more. In the one case, the mistake becomes a part of an ongoing process that leads to progress. In the other, you get a taboo you don't want to go near. It is suspected that gunpwder was created to aid in creating a canal system for harchong. what if a supposed plan for the this canal system is discovered? the harchong support it due to the fortune they could gain in graft and bribes, and tthe church will as it could let them try to compete.
