Yet there is no mention of their appearance at any of the battles, which strikes me as odd. I would have thought an apex predator such as this would have learned that the sounds of a sea battle are likely associated with food, and would be drawn to battles.

I released them. My bad sorry.

How deeply have the kraken been studied? Are they hunted/fished for?
I love the idea of enemy ships being swarmed by them somehow. SAy the enemy ships were doused in pheremones which draw the beasts to them. See them deal with their ship being borded.
The navy of god dont have metal coated hulls, and we know thier hulls get eaten up, so can krakens break through.

Kraken oil is made like whale oil on earth, for lamps lubrication, tempering, etc. Other than oil lamps coal gas from the cokeing ovens and candles there is no other source of light. "Krakening" is the whaling of Safehold, and even more dangerous than Whaling as Kraken are more dangerous.

Safeholdians have Sea Dragoning. Sea Dragons IIRC are larger than larger than earths whales and contain more oil etc., the downside of the whole thing is Doomwhales which attack sea dragon ships of which several are lost every year.

How big a threat are krackens a threat to metal hulled ships or steam ones? would they be better hunters?

You are thinking of the mythical giant kraken of Earth. Krakens on Safehold are much smaller. They are not a threat to any ship larger than a rowboat.

Think of them more as the equivalent of giant sharks than as the giant ship-grabbing monsters of myth.

The hulls might be vulnerable to sea life.

Not exactly true, one books states the deep water kraken have been spotted at over 50 feet in length, with rumors of even larger.

Sea oils are sold as grades of kraken oil, since that was the original, but it said in one of them that sea dragon oil was now much more common. I think it was because sea dragons are much bigger and provide more oil than krakens. But yes, sea life on Safehold is more dangerous than sea life on Earth.

I kinda like the idea of spear guns, and under water weapons of a similar nature being create to allow them to hunt them more effectivly. Say they lower down something something like a shark cage, to draw in the prey, then use the better weaponry to take out the animals.
I wonder how kraken and sea dragon taste like, could be a potential source of revenue, selling caned kracken.
