My old laptop died. The new one runs Windows 8.1. I downloaded and registered the pc reader app. Attempted to read my weber material not purchased from Amazon. The reader didn't see the files I'd saved and moved on to the new machine. Next I had a very nice chat with Divya from Kindle support.
She informed me the version of pc reader for Windows 8 does not accept/recognize material not purchased from from Amazon.
1.Recommendations on my new reader? I'm thinking Nook.
2. Does Baen allow downloads of other formats for previous purchases? I'm pretty sure I'll be able to get new versions of my Grantville Gazzetes
Make sure you take real good care of your windows pc's.
Charybdis wrote:This may or may not work with Win8.x as it is what I do with using Amazon's Kindle software on my Apple Mac. I select the book in Baen and download the book to my hard drive in Kindle format. I then use my file search to find the file with the '.mobi' extension. For my Mac, if I double-click on this file, it will open up the book in Kindle and from that point on it will be in the Kindle 'library' selection.
If I want to read the selection on my iPad or IPod Touch, I can 'add' the selection from the iTunes App operation again using the '.mobi' file.
I hope that this is not too confusing and helps somebody.
As the original poster said, that doesn't work for the app version on Windows 8.
In my defense, on my Mac I too cannot see any d/l files not bought from Amazon. What I was suggesting was to see if opening the file from the file manager [Windows Explorer] would load a default reader, in this case Kindle. There is a difference between native program recognition and the O/S file association operation. If you have normal operations that freely permit PDFs to be read by 'X' and MP4s by 'Y', it is interesting that Amazon can circumvent it. As well I suggest that it is to Amazon's interest to discourage purchase from non-Amazon sites, so the word of their tech support might not be the end of the matter and thus my suggestion.
Next, since Kindle is not the only reader that Baen supports, I guess he could try one of the other format selections for fit and finish. This is in light that going out to purchase a new device [B&N Nook] is less than cost effective when a cheaper/free software selection can work.
None-the-less, this story makes me happy too have shifted to Macs after 30+ years in the PC/DOS/Win world. For the stuff I have to have as PC, Parallels does me fine.
