I read the first Game of Thrones book and I'm not going back for more. Firstly I thought the characterisation was poor and main protagonists acted in ways that were way outside their supposed character and role. Secondly I liked very few of the characters and didn't get interested in many of them. Thirdly those I might have got on with, were all dead by the end of the book, and the series was clearly going to have to focus on people who had been relatively minor in book 1, which is to say the author had been mostly wasting my time with book one. Oh, I didn't like the ethos he seemed to be building up either. (Considering I enjoyed Joe Abercombie's First Law trilogy it's not because I'm that squeamish either.) I just felt that Game of Thrones was exploitative, like a soap opera in novel format.

I've read all of the books so far, but I've almost pitched them in the trash more than once. I totally agree with you about any likable character being killed off, which makes it very hard to stay interested. I know people have to die now and then to make the story believable and worth reading, but Martin takes it to extremes.

BTW, thanks to all of you for steering me to Taylor Anderson's Destroyerman series. Just finished the latest. While not as good as RFC' s series, it was still a pretty good read.

I curse the day I picked up a Game of Thrones. Can't say the same about coming across On Basilisk Station in Bean's free library many years ago. Hopefully the next book in this series is soon :D

I started Game of Thrones to find out what the TV series might be like. Didn't like most of the characters, didn't find the story interesting, threw the book away without finishing it. Oh, and made a definite decision not to bother watching the TV series.

The TV series was admittedly really good. You could not ask for a better adaptation of a series. Period.

Problem is that the ending of the last season, the Red Wedding is where I started actively disliking the series. Kills off all the characters I liked. Plus the 8+ years between books.


My best guess is late winter early spring of 2015 for the next Safehold book.

The thing is, I read for enjoyment. Unlikeable characters aren't enjoyable. Likeable characters getting killed off isn't enjoyable.
I KNOW people die in real life-and that they can do appalling things to one another.
That sort of thing was my day job for a good while. I KNOW it exists.
I choose to read other things.

A friend asked my opinion of "Game of Thrones" and was taken aback when I suggested that "There are too many words between the Murders"

I'm the exact opposite way. I was stunned and not a little bit appalled at some of the events in ASOIAF, but once I sat back and thought about it, the ability of an author to generate that kind of emotion in a reader is quite amazing. I guess also that whenever I go into a book (I just started reading the Safehold series, btw) I'm always looking for more I guess is the only way I can put it. How does everything fit together? How does everything play out? What the crap does it all mean!? And honestly (no offense RFC) nobody has done that better for me than GRRM, and the agonizing, teeth-gnashingly long wait in between the books only makes it that much better.

As one reader to another, and we obviously have good taste considering where this conversation is taking place, I beg you to give ASOIAF another chance because books like that just don't come around that often. In regards to the show: meh. I've always been a book over movie/tv person, and while the show is pretty good, it can't hold a candle to the book and only serves, for me at least, as a pleasant distraction until the next volume comes out.
