Up Is Down

Was re-reading ATST and came across this:

By now, Walkyr’s army had been driven clear back to Rainbow Waters’ Ferey River Line. It had lost contact with St. Vyrdyn—which the heretics had entered yesterday, if Rainbow Waters’ latest intelligence was correct—but its right flank continued to cling to the edge of the Tairohn Hills sixty or seventy miles north of the city.

Unless I'm mistaken the right wing of any Church army would be it's towards the SOUTH, so how can their right be towards their north?

Umm, easily. The city of St. Vyrdyn was south of the Mighty Host, but the line they were holding was north of that city.

True, the point being that the Ferey River north of St Vyrdyn runs about east-west from Slaigho to the Tairohn Hills. Since the church is now defending the north bank it would indeed be its right flank that is on the hills. (See the Northern Front map, preferably downloaded and viewed on a decent size screen.) Admittedly the quote does sound as if it is describing the remnants of the previous position but, as SCC points out, that wouldn't make sense.
