Did anyone else notice that Thirsk all the sudden knew about steam? I think it was after he discussed the lighter with his captains.
So if he does actually know and its not RFC spilling a bit, did his inquisitor tell him or does he have his own spies in the temple that told him? Both of those opens up a few more questions that will be fun to discuss. Did the inquisitor tell him with the authority of the Go4 or on his own accord? |

I figure he decided to take advantage of that and have the Church of God Awaiting construct their own steam engines. The way to do that would be to give the information to Lyncyn and Zhwaigair. Once Zhwaigair knows it, Thirsk knows it. ~Tonto |

He's talking with Hahlynd the screw-galley commander when he just refers to "the steam-powered" ironclads. Hahlynd seems comfortable with the term because he doesn't ask for any explanation . The Inquisition seems to have spread some information about the ironclads to at least senior naval officers. Most likely they also have some of their technical types looking at the data on the engines. Zhwaigar seems like a good possibility because of his metal-working skills. We'll find out in two years.

I guess it just seemed odd that the information about how the "demon ships" worked wasn't even glossed over. I get that RFC can't have ever discussion in the world of safehild in the story. But this one seems like a bit of a doozy after the ships wrecked havok all over.
Would have been nice to have had a "oh and here's the specs on how those "monitor style" ships work" conversation. Probably just comes down to wanting more details of the on goings of each character in the books. |

We already know Clyntahn has the theory for Steam. It is straight forward to assume that the theory has been disseminated to both Brother Lynkyn and Lt. Zwaigyr(sp?). We don't need another description of how steam works for story purposes. All in all , nothing here worthy of note. |

Agreed, Peter. While the Temple does have the description, they don't have diagrams or detailed plans. By the time someone like Zhwaigwair or Lynkyn could work it through to the point of producing something useful, the war will be over. Don When any group seeks political power in God's name, both religion and politics are instantly corrupted.

Religious wars can go on for a disturbingly long time.

Yes religious wars can go on forever, not however under the circumstances the CoGA has created. The CoGA is invested in the nobility or ruling class for its power and presence, whereas the Church of Charis and the Reformist church support is much broader at this point. Our history is replete with the entrenched religions being ousted by others due to this. Given how fast and easily Desnair dropped the CoGA, an empire who by appearances needs the CoGA support to support the right to rule of nobility bodes ill for any long term HOT religious war. Then throw in some other pesky facts, like how the CoGA has been utterly crushed militarily everywhere and the impending financial collapse (which btw IS part of the writ).
IMO I would expect more along the lines of civil wars in Harchong and Desnair to be long lasting affairs. Purely due to the industrial revolution supplanting landowners with factory owners and riflemen replacing all prior army models such as heavy cavalry. |
