Seijin Kohdy is described (in Safehold folklore) as the following.

Quote

Seijin Kohdy swirled through the tales about him like some sort of traveling conjurer or laughing vagabond. Or an Odysseus, perhaps. His times had been anything but humorous, yet the vast majority of those tales related as much to his craftiness, his ability to gain his objectives through guile and subterfuge as much as by the deadliness of Helm Cleaver, his magic sword … and to his humor, his weakness for attractive women, and his fondness for a glass of good whiskey.

End Quote

Yet, originally he was Sergeant Major Cody Cortazar, Terran Federation Marine Corps.

While I suppose there were elements in Sergeant Major Cody Cortazar that match the later Seijin Kohdy stories, I'm wondering if the Sisters of Saint Kohdy encouraged/started the roguish image of Seijin Kohdy in order to keep the memory of him alive on Safehold. :)

Well, I've known more than one Sergeant Major who would have fit that bill - especially the last two items ;)

Given the lack of official hagiographies, real memories of him would have persisted better than for seijins whose reputations the Church was burnishing, too.

That said, you're probably on to something.

That was my thought as well, that they started and spread the stories of the "fun" seijin in a way that would insure that they spread and maintained a life of their own, that no one would be able to squash. In this way, though few believe he is real, he's actually became the most well known and beloved seijin we've heard tell of.
