This one has been bugging me for some time now, so here goes;
In either HFAF or AMF, in the aftermath of the attempted assassination of the Empress, a priest raises the question of whether Merlin is or is not a demon. His superior made the comment that the 'last verified account of a Demon was 600 years ago'. Demon? Or something else? Wish I could be more precise, but the library that I go to didn't have a returned copy of either work at this time, nor did any of the affiliated libraries.( In my own defense, I've been waiting @ a month for one- the series seems very popular here in western WI ) Thanks for listening ====================================

600 years ago was to be the earliest their effort to restore the republic could start, and i am prtty sure some angels yet lived, so they would have known this.

IIRC the time frame mentioned would include the end of the "War Against The Fallen".
So the demon in question was likely one of the losers in the "War Against The Fallen".

600 years ago would also when surviving Command Crew would be dying off due to old age. IIRC The Adams and Eves with early Federation medical treatment but no continuing Federation medical support had century plus life spans. The "Angels" who had continuing Fed-tech medical support had lifespans that would reach 300 years from the Day of Creation. |

I'll try to nail this down a bit more concisely, but it might take a bit given the delays.I could have the time frame wrong,but I remember that there was something in the passage that started niggling me in the back of my mind.
It also struck me as quite possible that the difference between alien and demon wouldn't be one that the CoGA would see. At any rate, thanks for the replies, folks. I'll post when I have more accurate information on it. ====================================

Something to think about is "Demon not equal to Strange/Monstrous Appearance".
Or to put it another way "The Devil can appear to be an Angel of Light". Safehold theology likely doesn't claim that Demons are always Monstrous in appearance. The likely working definition of a Demon (on Safehold) is a being with powers beyond a human can do who is not an Angel. Of course, an Angel would (in the minds of Temple Loyalists) would support the Temple. Which is why Merlin can reasonably be considered a Demon by Temple Loyalists when he shows them just what he can do.

Hi Caliban,
It was in BSRA, by Bishop Mylz Halcom who tried to assassinate Sharleyan at a monastery in Charis after fleeing Margaret Bay before arriving in Tellesberg. L
Any snippet or post from RFC is good if not great!

From a mythological viewpoint, the term Demon originally meant any being with great power, usually one who thought and acted differently to normal humans.
As such, Demons were beings to treat with respect and extreme caution. The term Demon only became fully negative due to the rise of monoaetheistic religions such as Christianity. Their belief that a Supreme Deity held all power meant that Demons didn't fit into their worldview, therefore the Demons got re-defined. While some became Saints and/or Angels, most were simply relabeled Evil and placed in opposition to the Supreme Deity. Using this basis, the winners of the Command Crew Civil War were able to label their enemies as "Demons", thus reducing the chances of the losers finding a place to hide amongst the general population, a population that would be looking out for any signs of "Demonic taint" due to the Angel's commands. As Drak said earlier, this outlook is why the CoGA are able to describe Merlin as a Demon. He has plus-human abilities and doesn't support the CoGA, therefore, he is a Demon and must die. ~~~~~~
I can't write anywhere near as well as Weber But I try nonetheless, And even do my own artwork. (Now on Twitter)and mentioned by RFC! ACNH Dreams at DA-6594-0940-7995 |

Thank you, Lyonheart - that does help. It's obviously been too long since a full re-read on my part. And, Michael- while I fully agree with our Resident Dragon,along with you and others, on the fact that the CoGA (or at any rate, that virulent pustule ram-rodding the Go4) would see Merlin as a Demon due to his abilities, they have a much larger problem with Dyabb. Now, there's an individual with the correct mein to be seen as a Demon,IMO. Plus, it's gotta be fun for Merlin to be able to tear them apart without questions of conscience. ====================================
