You can't become an ensign without being a midshipman first.

Yeah, that's the bummer part. I was thinking of a temporary assignment. However, bypassing the progression of rank would destroy the whole process of learning to lead by first taking orders then giving them as rank and experience is gained.

He'll have learn leadership elsewhere. More work for Hektor, eh?

The main idea of my post about Daivyn joining the ECN as a midshipman was the leadership skills`he would develope as a midshipman and an officer. I think Daivyn would jump at the chance to be a middie. Daivyn could sail with the KHVII half a year and be home for the other half going to school and learning to be a prince. Looking at the British Royal Family, the men are almost always in their uniforms in photographs, I think most have served. I also think you have to start as a middie before you can become an Ensign. Daivyn could join the Haarahld with a group of Corisandians and Hektor to keep an eye on him, and Hektor is high enough in social ranking that he could offer advice and it could be used if no one else was in the inner circle.Daivyn could return a war hero with the squadron to Manchyr giving a huge boost to the intergration of Corsandie into the Empire.

Problem is Daivyn isn't an heir. He is the ruling Prince. Underaged perhaps but he is the Prince. That means he doesn't have as many options about taking risks.

While Cayleb as a Crown Prince can be a middy, Daivyn as ruling Prince of Corisande really can't. Temporary assignments are not the same thing as being a middy in truth.

Daivyn could start out as an admiral of the Fleet if Cayleb or Sharleyn were to appoint him to that rank via "imperial appointment."

I think it would be entirely reasonable for him to start as an ensign, assigned as an admiral's flag lieutenant. That would give him the exposure to command decisions without putting him directly in command.

Things I would like to see:

That sexist Sheltyn staggering back from the hospital after the ass kicking Nimue delivered to him.

A discussion between Duchairn and Traynair about the political consequences of such a large scale defeat (after Green Valley defeats Wyrshym, Sharpfield takes out Thirsk and Eastshare reinforced by Hanth swoop in on Kaitswyrth).

The liberation of one concentration camp... by Merlin, Nimue or one of their alter egos.

I want to see how the first member of the Guard reacts the first time they see him as he is staggering back.

To be far more modest: A posting date in April. 2014, even.

Another point to consider. Caleb had a younger brother just in case something happened to him. The succession would not have been in trouble. Daivyn does not yet have a direct heir. And probably wont for some time.
