Hi pokermind

My HOPE is that he makes it :?

Chisholm, Emerald, Tarot, and Zebediah are Charis, right along with Old Charis. Corisande is heading that way, as well, assuming that the political and marital plans set afoot in MT&T prosper (and Hektor doesn't die, of course  ). I would submit that since the ex-countries you listed can all expect to be burned to the ground and plowed with salt for having willingly joined the Charisian Empire if the Go4 wins the war, their populations are --- by and large --- about as "all in" as it gets.

So we have hints Hector has a 'mortal wound' IE dies, but may not die of it. Nor will we find out until the book arrives. My guess is he makes it what's yours?

Welcome to the Forums, Highjohn, may you contribute freely to our learned discussions and wait with us for February, 2014!

Unless RFC decides he shouldn't, then mortally wounded means he needed some time in a hospital. I have however voted dies.

From, English Dictionary

I guess the question should be is mortally used as a adverb or adjective?

adverb
1.in such a way as to cause or threaten death
2.to a very great extent or degree

adjective
1.(of living beings, esp human beings) subject to death
2.of or involving life or the world
3.ending in or causing death; fatal ⇒ a mortal blow
4.deadly or unrelenting ⇒ a mortal enemy
5.of or like the fear of death; dire ⇒ mortal terror
6.great or very intense ⇒ mortal pain
7.possible

But my hope is he lives!

That has been the discussion for the last month or so. Welcome to the forums. Enjoy yourself.

David just loves to throw a thought out there for us to contemplate to distract us from the fact that he can't write fast enough to keep us happy.

Edit to correct brain fart.

Sorry, HJ, that is not precisely what the word means. Recently we very thoroughly discussed this (in response to LAMA spoiler #6) and I included citations from first-class dictionaries that state otherwise.

[NOTE: it me took forever, but I finally found that comment: http://forums.davidweber.net/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=4015&start=140]

Thank you for that link, ColonialBoy and yes, I too did a better lookup myself so I am in full agreement. It is interesting how discussions on this thread and from other RFC works tend to send many of us to research.

Kudos to RFC for that and maybe to Baen as well since he has fostered DW and other such authors as well. The Drake/Flint 'Belisarius' series had me really digging into that history and of course Flint's 1632 universe is much better with a working knowledge of the actual history. Looking back, for my favorite SF addiction, it now looks I owe as much to Jim Baen as I do to John Campbell (Astounding/Analog)!

Higher compliment than that I cannot give! :!:

Hi Charybdis,

Yup, me too.

I got so hooked on John Cambell's Analog of the '60's, that when I could in the 70's, I went back to the 50's to read all my favorite authors forward to avoid missing any.

Aren't good libraries great?

In the '80's Jim Baen grew on me as he published great authors.

Unfortunately the younger generation of librarians don't seem to know what they have or they're supposed to be protecting and sharing, rather some think books as so outdated and get rid of bookshelf loads for computer games and videos.
