As the post from Evergreen explained, that oversized buckle is supposed to tie into the holo projectors that the bridge crew have. I say it's a perfect example of the "futurey" or "future-techy" look that I hate, a pointless futuristic-looking doodad just for the sake of looking futuristic. The holo projectors alone is plenty future tech, no need to add a bunch of silly crap on the uniforms or elsewhere. |

For that matter, if they wanted to include a holo projector of some kind, a take off on Google glasses would probably work better. It would even have the advantage of being somewhat familiar and understandable. _
