As I write this, the results are:-

Yes - 1,539,920
No - 1,914,187
31 of 32 declared.

The United Kingdom remains united!
Of course, this leads to a "what happens now?" moment.
The pro-independence movement is large enough that the whole political landscape has changed. It only remains that we see where it goes...

...and if England finally gets its own parliament like the other three countries have.

Of course, the West Lothian Question still remains in force...

Overall a good result. The UK remains united, but the Tory politicians and Whitehall fat cats have been served notice, so hopefully they will listen to the people for a change.

One cautionary note though, in Australia we have a Federal Government, State Governments, and local governments (councils). Lots of shiny bums who think they are important and expect commensurate pay. don't establish three complete tiers of bureaucracy, or you will have to pay for them.

Good result and a simply awe inspiring turnout of 84.59%.

Now it's up to England to decide what sort of devolution it wants as part of the UK.

Regional, or all England?

Over to you guys......

With Scotland voting to remain in the UK, the West Lothian Question has suddenly become even more intense. With Scotland in line to receive powers to raise and spend its own taxes, the fact that Scottish MP's can still vote on matters which don't affect them in the slightest is a cause of aggravation for many non-Scots.

How power devolves and whether England will (finally!) receive its own government is yet to be fully determined.

It's gonna be a bumpy ride!

Well, Salmond's done the honorable thing and fallen on his sword:

OK, not immediately, but at least he's going.

Aaaaand, trust Glasgow to lower the tone, that's the BBC reporting of trouble in George Square. Quelle surprise.....

Mike.

Given the "Glasgow welcome" that one man gave to a would-be Islamic Suicide Bomber at Glasgow Airport and the technique known as a "Glasgow Kiss"...

Yeah, I can easily see how the vote could lead to this.
(shrug)

On the plus side, the Royal Bank of Scotland (and quite a few other companies) won't need their "Get The Hell Out Of Scotland Before It Economically Collapses" plans any more.

Ha! :P

If they had left, it would have made Scotland less vulnerable to what befell Iceland.....

The banking sector is a mere 12 times bigger than it should be compared to the size of Scotland's economy. In Iceland it was eight times, I believe. So loosing the banks (RBS, I'm looking at you-hoo!) may well have been a good thing.

I tend to agree with you it may work best for the United Kingdom to be the government for the entire Kingdom, with each component (including England) having it's own parliament to deal with local affairs. England not having a parliament while the other components do, sets up an unequal situation and unequal situations aren't stable long term.

This is something I'm hopeful for as well. One Conservative MP from the South East has proposed to change Westminster thus:

Convert the current House of Commons into the English Parliament.

Abolish the House of Lords and replace it with a new elected chamber to cover the whole of the UK, with representation along county lines thus giving each an equal voice.

Now, how this would work out is an interesting question. One of the stumbling blocks to a parliament representing the whole of England is size. England has 85% of the UK population and if it had it's own parliament it would potentially be a rival to Westminster in terms of power. Thus none of the big three parties seem keen on the idea, and hence they prefer the idea of regional devolution to England's cities and counties. This has already taken place with London (which comes with it's own version of the West Lothian question), so there is a precedent.

Another question is if full federalism did take place, what proportion of powers would each unit have. Here in Scotland the SNP's current position post referendum is "More powers, preferably Devo-Max which to us means everything short of defence and foreign policy". That won't happen, but it will be interesting to see what "Home Rule" actually means as it will defacto act as a template for enhanced powers to Cardiff and Stormont and any possible devolution settlement in England.
