It would appear that the invasion of Syria by Turkey is setting the stage for the opening of The Twilight War. Russia needs borders it can defend and the borders it has are indefensible even without the ongoing demographic implosion. Turkey's invasion of Syria keeps Turkey occupied while presenting Turkey with opportunities to commit atrocities that will alienate the other members of NATO. Any conflict over the US withdrawing forces from Turkey, particularly the 50 nuclear weapons stored at Incirlik Airbase, will drive a stake through the heart of NATO. I do not discount the possibility that Russia and Turkey have reached a quid pro quo on Turkey seizing oil fields In Syria and Iraq while Russia seizes it's former vassal states.

President Trump is not only distracted, the process undermines the political cache that might enable a US President to intervene to protect countries that are not members of NATO. Trump also has isolationist leanings anyway.

Factor in the revelations that Ukraine was bribing Vice President Biden by giving his cocaine addicted, philandering son a multimillion dollar job that he wasn't remotely qualified for and interfering in the 2016 elections and the probability of the US employing force is zero.

I highly doubt that such actions may be advisable. In short, it would require rather... large-scale troop deployment. Not to mention, that Western Ukraine isn't exactly what we consider a worthy investment. Hostile population, little cultural ties remaining. Also, Poland have some interests here & it always good to have common interests with most military capable of your European neighbors (Germany military degraded to utterly embarrassing level)

The relationship between the US and Turkey is becoming so hostile that even if Russia has intentions, it would be advisable for Russia to just let things simmer. If Turkey gets to aggressive resisting the withdrawal of US nukes and other forces, NATO is likely to implode. Some countries like Belerus might even voluntarily integrate with Russia. Russia certainly doesn't need Ukrainian grain. With the German military degraded so embarrassingly, there is no plausible adversary in the region except Turkey that can threaten Russia. Better for Russia to be patient.

I presume that Russia has equipped the S-400 with a backdoor to keep Turkey from shooting down Russian planes.
