I have to say that my eyebrows did rise a bit at the Vietnam one...

My bad. Still, calling "Vietnam" totalitarian is pretty far from facts.

Russia has fallen to #3 for new infections behind Ecuador. The 50% growth rate is obviously an artifact of belated testing. However; any cases in an equitorial country is alarming.

In the incompetence department, here is a new one... HHS department head Alex Azar has appointed Brian Harrison to head the department's day to day response to the Coronavirus. Harrison joined the department in 2018 as an aid to Secretary Azar. Harrison's prior occupation was running a business breeding dogs, labradoodles, no less. No experience in public health at all.

Hmm. I got a M. Div from a seminary and spent 35 years as a parish pastor. I wonder if I could con the Trump Administration to hire me as a brain surgeon... I could specialize in frontal lobotomies...

Have you checked what he did at the different places he worked at? Just asking...

The guy in question has an extensive career in relevant fields. He also became a dog breeder which is cited misleadingly as proof that he is not qualified.

I know an extremely talented and well respected Attorney who put herself through law school by working as a stripper. Since she didn't suffer from the usual drug abuse problems and relationship turmoil, it was an extremely lucrative job that enabled her to support herself, pay tuition and other expenses without having to work long hours. She is admitted to practice law in Federal court as well as State court. She has argued cases at the State Supreme Court level. Would it be reasonable to define her qualifications as "nude dancer?"

I will back off partially here. Harrison does seem to be a competent bureaucrat which is something to be valued, not ridiculed. And he does seem to have done some evaluative work with CDC. The fundamental question as to whether he has sufficient background in public health to hold his current job still is up for grabs, however.

I know that were I to appoint someone to that job, I would want someone experienced in dealing with pandemics.

So, maybe partial bullshit, not all the way.

His background seems to be PR. Healthcare related PR admitadly. But still, it's not exactly a good background for his current job, unless it's again PR.

His major was economics, not public health. It sounds to me as I read that article that he is the sort of guy who could head up a department and keep the gears moving. Evaluating CDC sounds more like systems analysis, something you would do if a department became dysfunctional. That's valuable work if he did it well.

The other thing is that at 37 he is still pretty young. If he is really going to be coordinating the Administration's response to the pandemic and be anything other than an errand boy, he lacks gravitas, not the well seasoned, public health professional they need.

So as much fun as the labradoodle bit was, I will agree that there is more to the guy than that. That is only fair. But it Doesn't establish that he is qualified for his position.
