So, the Hugo Awards are held in China this year and it turns out the Chinese government leaned on the Hugo Awards to exclude authors from it that they didn't like.

Talk about gutting your own reputation and letting a censorious government dictate and censor the awards.

The controversy damaged the Hugo Awards' reputation. Many felt it undermined the integrity of the awards and raised concerns about future awards held in countries with censorship.
It's a complex situation, but it definitely highlighted the importance of the Hugo Awards remaining independent and true to their values.
