There are dozens and dozens of How To Books on the library book shelves listed under "Mystery" My wife must read 20 to 30 Murder Mystery books a month and has for years...

Roald Dahl short story I think, later made into an episode of a TV show based on his works.

I saw a mystery where the victim was strangled with a leather thong on a beach — but there were no footprints within fifty feet of the body. The murderer made a bolo by freezing chunks of ice to the ends of the thong.

It's been tried. All you get is a puff of steam.

Now, it is possible to kill somebody (or yourself) with a blank. The blast of hot gas can do a lot of damage to anything within a few inches of the gun's muzzle.

An icicle might or might not work being fragile. Try an icicle of Pykrete with a thin coat of pure ice, followed by dunking it in a bucket of boiling water to be dumped in the sawdust covering the backyard garden.
