Hi,

I was wondering if you know some good military sci-fi books depicting infantry style combat against a human or human-like foe (no 40k-ish stuff).

To give you an example: The infantry engagements in DW's first part of In Fury Born are pretty much of what I'm looking for.

Or something like a military sci-fi fictional version of the Battle in the La Drang valley (We were soldiers once... and young).

Thanks for all answers! :)

You should try:
Freehold by Michael Z. Williamson

A list of military SF authors; about half are infantry/marine oriented: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_mi ... nd_authors

All good suggestions. Bolo stories are also good. John Ringo has a number of good series.
Heinlein's Starship Troopers (book not the movie).

Thanks for your recommendations, but I'd just like to highlight this again.

I know Starship Troopers and Legacy of the Aldenata, and the humans in these books are NOT fighting against human foes. I have no idea in what other recommendations of you there are alien foes as well then. ;)

As I said, please only human or at least human-like foes.

Not all of the Legacy of the Aldenata involve battle against the Posleen. Most of the later books involve combat against humanoid enemies, or their human catspaws.

You mean Cally's War?

I've read all four of the main-line books and the three side-novels, plus the first Hedren War movie. Except for the Hedren movie, it was always humans against Posleen. And in the Hedren book, there was no infantry style fighting.

That's one. Hero is another, IIRC. I don't recall which books have which action specifically, or know exactly what you're looking for as "infantry action."

You might like the Lon Nolan saga/ Dirigent Mercenary Corps series by Rick Shelley. It tracks Lon Nolan from officer candidate to corps commander and is almost entirely infantry action.

Some series/books I've read and enjoyed:

This is humans (and a few aliens - 3 at the start, 6 later) vs humans (and some aliens, but they are pretty human, really - just weird).

I'm not sure there are any aliens in this setting (I could have forgotten/missed them, though).

As noted by others, mostly against aliens, but some against humans.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Empire_of_Man
(You can discuss this series in the Empire of Man forum here)
First three are mostly against aliens (with increasing alien support), last book is against humans.

There are aliens, which is most of the combat. Eventually, human foes show up, but we don't see much of that.

The rest I haven't read. S. M. Stirling is pretty good, though. I should follow that link...

Old mans war by scalzi, lots of fighting on the ground.

There are also the "there will be war series", its an anthology of many authors most of scify battles. Some are mercs who operate on lesser worlds using whatever tech they are limited too, by the powers that be, to the clones who find themselves fighting themselves. Battle armoured guys who have heavy or light armour, fighting aliens who can teleport, all sorts really.

Book 9 in the series.
