The universal language of music is a powerful expression. Many music artists draw upon the imaginative works of Sci-Fi and Fantasy for inspiration and themes.

Share & discuss your favorite music that takes you to another world.

Some Haiduk to kick it off. Dark fantasy inspired black/death metal. From the album 'Exomancer':

I’d start with the most obvious ones, Blue Oyster Cult and Rush.

Mannheim Steamroller's Fresh Aire 5 album.

Led Zeppelin, Ramble On
Styx, Come Sail Away

Jefferson Airplane, Crown Of Creation — from John Wyndham's The Chrysalids

Jefferson Starship, most of the Nuclear Furniture album

The most obvious source is Filk songs, like:

When I read Honor's death ride I kept hearing Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture in my mind.

...may I put forth a Weird Al Yankovik song or two?
Both are very Star-Wars-y.

The Piano Guys joined in on the fun too...

However, on a book-related note, there's the albums Masterharper of Pern and Sunset's Gold on iTunes which are based on the Dragonriders of Pern series by Anne McCaffrey.

PTerry's Discworld series also has its own musical albums and the book Soul Music has many types of music in it (including Rat Music...). One of the songs can be found here.

I can't write anywhere near as well as Weber
But I try nonetheless, And even do my own artwork.

1812 is a paean of victory and living to see it. Going into a ride of death and glory is obviously Ride of the Valkyries. (It is bombastic and damned proud of it!)

I never doubted Honor.

Ah yes. I do recall Rush always meddling in grandiose, sci-fi scenarios. Not sure if the content from '2112' were stories written by the band themselves or based on some book. Not a huge fan of Geddy Lee's vocals either way...

Interesting to note that it's mostly older artists who are being listed here. Perhaps escapism in music was more popular in 4-5 decades ago.

::snort::

Try Fantasia - all of the music for which [other than a bit of fill like the tuning of the orchestra] was at least 50 years old when it first screened.
