I've seen it, considered it and I agree with Shad of Shadiversity.
It's trash.
Oh, it's
entertaining trash, it certainly tried to do big action and Good Guys(TM) winning, it had some good characters, Billie Dee Williams returned and almost stole the film in the scenes he was in... and Ian MacDermid
certainly hammed it up gleefully.
But while it was entertaining, it was of the
Will probably re-watch one or two times*, but not really clear my schedule for it type of entertaining.
The Planet-destroying Star Destroyers, though, were just lazy. Canon (both pre- and post-Disneyfication) contains prototype Star Destroyers with superlasers built in, firing their beam through a split prow (which was cool). They would have been perfect as a basis for an upgraded ship (akin to how the Resurgent could be considered an upgraded Imperial-II) but what did we get? the Imperial-1 CGI model from Rogue One with a honkin big gun jammed into its main hanger and then the whole thing inflated by 50%... without adjusting things like portholes proportionally! Look at the bridge tower and the front windows are now over four meters high going by the canon ship length! You don't need to be an A-wing pilot to crash into something that big... and inside the Bridge, having the ceiling four meters plus above the deck? Too high to be comfortable for the crew but too low to slot in another level on the Bridge to reinforce the hierarchical design we see in the other Star Destroyer classes.
And the cavalry fleet... no new ships among them, only duplications of ships from the previous films...
End conclusion?
They just didn't care...
Just like the Picard TV series which is re-using all the ST:Discovery CGI models of the shuttles, drydocks etc, despite the in-universe 140 year time gap and the better models used in the Original Series...
The new generation of sci-fi film-makers simply don't seem to care about the small-but-important details any more.
*"Star Wars 8 - The Lost Wokester" is on my I own it for completions sake, but after seeing it once at the cinema, I have no real desire to re-watch it list. OTOH, I've watched the original trilogy dozens of times since they first came out and the prequels several times since I saw Ep8. I appreciate George's vision more now, thanks to Rian Johnson.
