Islamic radicalism has been around for a long time (the genesis of the Muslim Brotherhoods can be traced to the 1920's), so ISIS or whatever name they morph into will be around for a long time to come, unless and until there is an effective counter message which is more appealing to the population than radical Islam.
Like European Christianity, Islam is also split into violently opposed factions; in Europe this climaxed in the 30 years war (ending in 1648), and I expect the Shia and Sunnis are teetering over the edge of a similar religious conflict, probably with similar horrific results. Right now, *we* should NOT be expending Western blood and treasure fighting ISIS; the Iranians are already fighting them with their Quds forces, SU-25 ground attack aircraft and Hezbollah fighters (bought and paid for by Iran), let them take the risks and absorb the casualties. All *we* need to do is park a few carrier battle groups off the coasts to keep the fighting contained and put on popcorn. To support our own foreign policy objectives in the area, *we* should continue to support Israel, Jordan, the Kurds and Baloch people so *we* have an in later on, but otherwise leave them to their own devices. |

Slavery existed from as far back as we have history of until just a few centuries ago. Wilberforce and allies were, AFAIK the first to abolish it on a national level. This may not be correct, history is a large subject, and none of us knows all the nooks and crannies of it. They had a major fight doing it, even though it was a political fight and not a physical one. It looks to me like those who favor slavery today are trying to make up for the time they lost in the last few centuries by now making it more horrific. Douglas Hvistendahl

Aum Shinrikyo was in Japan I was in Tokyo between the Attacks and during the threat to the water system that was really tense with everyone staying in doors except for the army and police patrolling the streets. The Government had updates and testing every 15 minutes on the water supply said it wasn't poisoned. It was the second longest line and most security checks I've every been through at Narita airport. As for SISI (ISIS backwards, which they are) I think we need a new crusade, need to take out their backers, in Saudi and need to introduce a new version of Islam that follows more closely to Christianity has less divisions than the other two and educate the masses equal rights etc... Next Boko Haram. ________________________________________

I drift back to Nikita Le Femme and wonder how much this world would benefit from a Section 1.

Great. A new version of Islam. Just what is needed to cause the Shia and Sunni to unite to combat the new heretics. ========================

There are at least a dozen variations of Islam (Sufi, Druze, Alawite, Twelvers, Ismailis, Ahmadiyya, Ibadi, Mahdavia, Yazdânism, Quranists, Non-denominational Muslims and other offshoots like Nation of Islam), so there are plenty of "Heretics" out there already for the Shia or the Sunni to combat. My sense of the issue is the Shia and Sunni are eager to commit most of their energy and resources against the "main" opponent, and any of the others who get crushed between the main combatants is a bonus. They will "get around" to dealing with other branches of heretics once they have finished off the main group... |

I seem to remember an odd statistic that said something along the lines of more muslims have been killed by muslims than by practitioners of any two other religions combined.
I think it included honour-killings (what a terribly inaccurate name for them) in addition to the fights between different factions of Islam, but my memory has failed me on this and I can't track down the statistics involved. PS Sunni and Shia... anyone else have to fight down laughter at how much it sounds like Sonny and Cher? ~~~~~~

Personally i am getting really tired of all of the religious fanaticism going on all over the world. Having experienced it first hand growing up in small town Indiana, i am less than thrilled with it and MANY times wish we could get along without a need for a religion. However i know most people desire one and i generally leave people alone.

Bit of a difference between burning a book and chopping people's heads off. Even a book that tells you to chop people's heads off. ----------------- If you give politicians money to pay the government's debts, they will spend it and borrow more. |
