I can't believe I forgot this one:

The Paladin of Shadows series by John Ringo -- aka the Kildar series, aka the Ghost series

Almost all of the "action" is small unit infantry against impossible odds. There is a distinct flavor of "special operations" and asymmetric warfare and it is not terrible realistic and has been accused of being misogynistic, but it is a fun read featuring infantry.

If you can find them, the Peace Company series by Roland Green is good. It's an older series, but very good. Peace Company, These Green Foreign Hills, The Mountain Walks

A series by Robert A. Frezza; A Small Colonial War, Fire in a Far Away Place and Cain's Land is real good. The last book has aliens as the enemy, but the first two have humans as the antagonist.

The authors do a very good job at describing the combat, weapons and tactics used. As well as strategy and possible political considerations that have to be dealt with.

Forever War by Joe Haldeman... I am surprised this wasn't recommended outright since unlike even Heinlein (Starship Troopers) who did his time in active service though not in war, Haldeman was drafted in Vietnam, and his experience in the Vietnam "conflict" is poured through in The Forever War.

I'm pretty stunned no one has mentioned Pournelle's Falkenburg's Legion Series. Later books were written with SM Stirling.

Ack! I can;t believe I'd forgotten about those. The books in that universe are good. Solid hard fiction. From the Co-Dominion books to Falkenberg's Legion books to the two books on the planet Sparta. The short stories on Haven are pretty good too. Some are modern weaponry, others more primitive weapons, but well thought out and a good read.

A couple of good series depicting infantry fights would be the General series and also the Sten series.

Gordon R Dickson's "Dorsai" series may not get down and dirty with hand to hand combat, but is still quite Infantry centric (The Dorsai are a people from a poor planet who make their living as mercenary soldiers)
