I cannot help but think that a movie adaptation of the Honorverse is a horrible idea.. Just think, how could a book as intricate as Basilisk Station or Honor of the Queen be fit into a 2 hour time period?
Instead, I have to ask myself... How would the Honorverse look if it was adapted into a TV Series by a company such as HBO. Just imagine the Honorverse as a new Game of Thrones type show.. Each season could entail two full books in a 10-12 episode season and allow A HUGE amount of detail to be included. Non-readers could actually 'see' what we have read in the books and become fans, while the amount of imagery that 5-6 40+ minute episodes could give to each book would be a huge increase over 'just' a movie. AND, with both split off series, this could be a TV series that runs for 8-10 years once all is said and done... Thoughts? Evergreen Studios? |

I don't know about Game of Thrones but I agree, like George R. Martin's books the Honor Saga, or more specifically, the Honor saga dealing with the Solarian League and Mesa really requires a mini series at worst and at best a non pandering, adult 5-10 two hour part serial. I do think the first 6 books could be made into quite good movies however, the first being Honor of The Queen (of course) |

You guys might want to look into the Evergreen forum. There have been a few discussions about movie vs series there.

Link? I just believe that a 12 episode (42 minutes each) focusing on the first two books would do a lot more justice to the beauty of Honorverse than 1 movie could ever do... A tremendous cast of characters (everyone important, including Parnell) could be introduced, with that battle with Sirius being the 5th episode and pre-Christmas endpoint and then the time on Grayson being another 6 or 7 episodes ending the first season... The second season could be the battle of Hancock and then ending with the duel with Pavel Young.... Imagine it! |

It's at the top of the topic list, labeled "Evergreen Studios." For the record, I think a video series would be a lot more likely to succeed, and would be a lot more flexible. |

I think the problem would be getting the initial investment set up: the first season being the bank breaker in that 90% of the CGI type work has to be realized up front to be used later. [any gazillionaires wish to kickstart fund this? call RFC at...] I for one would rather see the series, of course, let's say they went for "2-3 books per season", that's still something like seven seasons worth of great shows, maybe 100-120 episodes, not counting any offshoot books written in the mean time. A quick by the way. I think I'd introduce the HonorVerse in a HD TV series with the "Last View" scene from Shadow of Saganami, then segue into the opening credits. ---------------------
All my posts are YMMV, IMHO, and welcoming polite discussion, extension, and rebuttal. This is the HonorVerse, after all |

A TV series could work, but not by doing the one-book-per-season method, as the early ones just don't have enough to sustain even an 8-episode season (and HOtQ can work as a 2-hour movie, just strip away the infodumps and other exposition and what's left is a pretty straighforward story). The scale would have to be greatly expanded beyond the books, probably starting with King Roger III, and including Haven, the SL and Mesa. Game Of Thrones works because it was partly inspired by England's Wars Of The Roses, which itself reads like fiction; no surpise it makes for a good basis for actual fiction. Thus, things like politics, plots and intrigues of which there are plenty og already) would have to be ramped up to provide enough "meat" for an Honorverse TV series.

This thread would really be better in the Evergreen subforum, where this topic has already been discussed.
And for those who didn't catch it, Evergreen and Weber are indeed considering switching to doing a tv series instead of a movie, exactly because of the difficulty of squeezing the story down to 2 hours. --------------------------------------------
