It's sad when the only words out of people's mouths our "I/we can't" or "it won't work" instead of trying to find ways to do things.
But then, what do I know - I'm nobody. :(

David's stance is no fanfics where he can see it, such as here or on his subforums on Baen's Bar. He has horror stories about legal troubles some authors have had regarding attribution of ideas. Consequently, he avoids the issue altogether by disallowing it anywhere he has authority over. Even posts which get a little too detailed regarding hypothetical ideas (by which I mean thousand word treatises, not the stuff that typically shows up in the course of forum discussions) tend to be frowned upon.

Duckk's got the Word of Weber there, but if you dig deep in the archives of this Forum there are a few 'snippets', where people wrote a few paragraphs about a specific instance that they imagined (those have also been suppressed AFAIK). I've argued that we should be allowed to write snippets about events that we know occurred but will never see in the books (i.e., Tourville finding out about the peace treaty), but that is still a no go.

Of course, there is the Website That Must Not Be Named.

Blame the lawyers. Almost every author that I know has had to announce a similar policy.

On the other hand, he doesn't go looking for it or instruct minions to do so either, so there are some Honorverse stories posted at the most popular online repository for fanfic, some of which may have been written by some of us.

I admit that in the past, I did post a few what if-type scenelets that approached bordering on being fanfiction, but I carefully placed a notice saying that David Weber had all rights etc.
I think my stance redeemed me in his eyes, since Weber has in return trolled me and mentioned me in a webcast whilst his (wonderful, beautiful and magnificent) wife let me cameo her in one of my Superman/X-men Evolution fanfics, even making a few suggestions that I gratefully incorporated.

Of course, David Weber once did an Omake crossing over most of his book series which can be found here.

I can't write anywhere near as well as Weber
But I try nonetheless, And even do my own artwork.

Basically, don't post it anywhere he can see it (here, Baen's bar, etc), and don't make a point of telling him you write it (though I may be wrong about the last), and he won't deliberately go looking for it.

As a fanficcer myself - though I refuse to confirm or deny any allegations that some such fanfic might have been Honorverse - I credit it heavily with developing my own writing talents to the point where I am now also working on original material. More than a decade writing in various fandoms has been extremely helpful in polishing my writing skills. (In particular, a novel-length Star Trek fanfic I wrote way back when is pretty much entirely responsible for teaching me how to write an actual plot, as opposed to the vignettes and single scenes I had specialised in before then.)

That said, having heard the horror stories from one of my favorite authors, Marion Zimmer Bradley, and other such who have dealt with copyright issues - not to mention potentially being a published author in my own right someday - I entirely understand why he wishes to be able to honestly say that he never saw any of it. It's a copyright minefield, and while some authors are more permissive than others, I think it's incredibly important to respect whatever the author's stance is -- which in this case is keeping it out from under RFC's nose.

Besides, if I'm very lucky, he'll write that five-volume treatise on the Republic of Haven and its most-beloved-by-me characters, and fanfic in this 'verse will then become utterly irrelevant to me.

Well said Rose. Not to mention that one recourse of this said author could be to kill the source of the fanfic - this forum. And we wouldn't want that. Would we? NO!

Now about that Star Trek piece, Rose. May I beg for you to share?

Hey, you can't just throw s'thing like that out to a Trekkie. You know the source of my user name!

Assuming Our Lord Mod okays posting the link, I'd be happy to share.

(Disclaimer: said fanfic does not contain so much as one whiff of the Honorverse, nor any other Weber 'verses.)
