It's sad when the only words out of people's mouths our "I/we can't" or "it won't work" instead of trying to find ways to do things.
But then, what do I know - I'm nobody. :(

I have no idea what to say. At first I thought he was just being funny, but the more I think about it the the more they seem to fit, which has me laughing even harder.

What do the rest of you think?

I've always been reminded of Germany when it comes to the Andermani. Right before the occupation of Austria. Which makes Silesia into Austria.

Not much of a parallel. But reminds me.

I'm sorry, but making the Israeli's the Mesan alignment and the Palestinians the Torchese is rather a lousy set of choices, either side of the argument. The Jewish people went through 2000 years of ethnic persecution PLUS a holocaust because of genetics and big powers came together to give them a home, which almost casts them in the Torchese role. That doesn't mean that the Israeli government has made universally good choices. The Palestinian peoples today remind me of the seccees on Mesa however, so calling them "Mesan Alignment" would be wrong. So let's agree to disagree on those. Will post my thoughts on who is closeest to whom later in another post, gotta think about some historical folks as well.

Well, I think your friend skews a bit left (and this from a guy who votes Democratic in Alabama) in his choices, but here's mine:

Sollies: China to some extent, but the old USSR or Otttoman Empires are better examples.

Monica: East Germany or Cuba used to be, I think an argument could be made for Taiwan being in that position.

Mesan Alignment: ISIS would be, but I doubt they have the ability or intelligence to become a state. Iran might do for it.

Torch: Israel is the 800-lb. gorilla in the region, so it's out. Cuba might be 25 years from now. Maybe Senegal, who has managed to have a participartory democracy with peaceful changes of government for over 30 years on a continent that is still having trouble with the concept.

Andermani: Prussia under Bismark with Mandarins.

Silesia: It's always some damn fool thing in the Balkans.

Manticore: England circa 1900--at the height of it's powers.

Haven: The MWW has always described this as the USA gone amok, and I see no reason to disagree.

Erewhon: Sicily is not a nation, but it is a region that fits.

Grayson: Maybe close to Israel, as religion is the basis for the state and they have problems between the more secular and the more "Faithful".

Others?

That selection is just as hilarious as nuts. ;)

Here's what I'd do:

Sollies = Future dystopian United States
Monica = No idea actually
Mesan Alignment = Nazi Germany without Lebensraum ideology
Torch = 1950ies Israel (srsly... the group of people who's bullied by just about everybody and needs to take their home by force? What fits more than Israel? :D)
Andermani = 1880ies Germany
Silesia = Pre-Prussia Germany
Manticore = 1930ies United States (At the beginning they were basically some kind of isolationist haven... until other powers forced them to expand)
Grayson = That's kinda hard... I have no idea
Erewhon = Singapore :D
Haven = Current United States (their belligerence surely matches...)

I'm kinda missing France, China, Japan and Russia in there...

Actually, if you look at the Pearls of Weber and the time periods used to inspire the books (Manticore vs. Haven = Napoleonic Wars, Manticore + Haven Vs. Mesa and Sollies = Crimean Wars). Therefore:

Manticore = Britain
Haven= France
Grayson = Japan (not period accurate, but mentioned several times by Weber
Beowulf = Italy
Talbot Quadrant = Middle East/India
Solarian League = Ottoman Empire
Mesa = Russia
Andermani Empire = Holy Roman Empire/Germany
Silesia = Sub-Saharan Africa/South America

Spain during the age of Sail with their regions of North and South America would be the Sollies.

The Pacific Rim would be the Talbot Cluster. Japan, USA Canada Australia Singapore etc....

Germany Andermani Empire.

British Empire is Manticore with India being Basilisk

Africa is Silesia

Israel is Grayson with the Palestine being Masada.

Portugal might be Mesa

Russia could be Haven.

France might be considered Beowulf.

Persia being the Verge.

Haven: the United States (recovering dystopian version)

Manticore: the United Kingdom (pre- and early-Imperial)

Basilisk: early colonial Australia / Malta (really Malta if it were the size and had the natives of Australia)

San Martin: Canada / Gibraltar (really Gibraltar if it were the size of and as populated as Canada)

Talbot Cluster: a voluntarily colonized India; Lynx = Suez Canal (maybe really Talbot is an India/Egypt hybrid)

Grayson: Japan (Meiji Restoration)

Masada: no real analogue...

Andermani: Prussia (pre-Napoleonic Wars)

Silesia: Silesia / the German principalities of the Holy Roman Empire (with Manticore playing a largely disinterested Austria since there's no Austria analogue) post-Thirty Years War, pre-French Revolution

Solarian League: combination of (1) the European Union (minus Germany and the UK) if it swallows up the rest of Eurasia and Africa (except India and Turkey), (2) late-Qing China with the bureaucracy and stagnation to match (substitute Ottoman Empire here as you like), and (3) the Spanish and Portuguese Empires (the Protectorates)

Erewhon: Turkey (it's not a member of the EU but flirts with the idea, and it's important for trade given its wormhole junction, e.g. the Turkish Straits)

Maya: I've painted myself into a corner with this one... colonial South America if the Panama Canal linked the Turkish Straits to the English Channel?

Beowulf: modern-day France if it were run by medieval guilds? (English Channel = Beowulf wormhole terminus)

Mesa: no real analogue, something like the Dominican Republic (the planet itself, complete with a 18th century Caribbean pirate haven) run by a Beowulfan-guild turned Evil Corporation (that runs the Spanish/Portuguese slave trade)

Mesan Alignment: the Illuminati if it was founded by Star Trek's Khan with the best of intentions

Monica: Cuba (if it were off the coast of India instead of South America)

Torch: Haiti post-Revolution
