Hi SWM,

I think Cthia's concern might be more with people wearing breath masks but not changing and rinsing off before contact with treecats, so the residue on their clothes might be toxic enough for to cause some unrecognized problems for the treecats, although I expect a bunch of of nanobots could be injected to collect and eliminate the heavy metals, just as on Hades to deal with the 'false potato' poisons.

Ah, yes, I see. It is a reasonable concern.

I'm not too worried about it. Unlike humans, treecats almost never leave protected areas. But it's certainly possible that some might be exposed unexpectedly and suffer harm. They face the same dangers as the other residents of Grayson. Accidents are rare, but they happen.

On the other hand, I would say that the civilized areas of Grayson where the treecats spend all their time are far less dangerous than their native forests on Sphinx. :) They don't have to worry about forest fires, peak bears, hexapumas, famines, or simply falling out of trees. Even Nimitz, in a similarly controlled environment but exposed to the perils of war, is in far greater danger of poisons and radiation than the resident treecats of Grayson.

That's more or less one of the types of accidents I was referring to. Graysons are careful about things like that--they don't want to spread poisons to their own spouses and children, or scatter it around their crops or ventilation systems, either. But accidents do happen. It's a valid concern.

All the TreeCats in Harrington are "under the dome" and the soil in the Harrington Steading gardens has been de-contaminated for that purpose.
When White Haven met Honor at the start of IEH prior to her taking up her cruiser squadron command, White Haven was wearing a dust mask while outside. That is likely the common practice for non-Graysons.

On Basilisk Station
"How do you plan to stop her, Ma'am?"

"We're still in Manticoran space, and what's happening on Medusa certainly constitutes an 'emergency situation.' Under the circumstances, I have the authority to order any ship to heave to for examination."

"You know Haven doesn't accept that interpretation of interstellar law, Ma'am." McKeon's voice was low, and Honor nodded. For centuries, Haven had championed the legal claim that the right of examination meant no more than the right to interrogate a ship by signal unless it intended to touch or had, since its last inspection, in fact touched the territory of the star system in which the examination was demanded. Since turning expansionist, the Republic had changed its position (within its own sphere) to the one most of the rest of the galaxy accepted: that the right of examination meant the right to physically stop and search a suspect ship within the examiner's territorial space regardless of its past or intended movements. But Haven had not accepted that interpretation in other star nations' territory. In time, they would have no choice but to do so, since the double standard they claimed was so irritating to the rest of the galaxy (including the Solarian League, which had all sorts of ways to retaliate short of war), but they hadn't yet, and that meant Sirius's master might very well assert Haven's old, traditional interpretation and refuse to stop when called upon to do so.

Can someone explain to me what interrogate a ship by signal is?

Son, your mother says I have to hang you. Personally I don't think this is a capital offense. But if I don't hang you, she's gonna hang me and frankly, I'm not the one in trouble. —cthia's father. Incident in ? Axiom of Common Sense

To obtain what exactly? You can be lied to by comms.

Exactly. Which is the difference between Haven's interpretation and Manticore's interpretation. That's the entire point of that text. Manticore said they had the right to come aboard, and Haven said they didn't.

And note that Haven interpreted it Manticore's way in their own space, when they wanted to board a vessel. :) They only interpret it the other way with regard to other nations boarding Haven's vessels.

Yep, asking them for their papers and identification over a com link is a piss poor way to inspect through traffic.

They'd basically have to lie stupidly and get caught in it before you could catch them. (Or fail to lie about something that they should have - like a wanted criminal on their crew)

Because, even under Haven's interpretation, I assume that if you had proof that they lied about their ship's registration, prior itinerary, or crew ID you could board the ship for closer inspection. But aside from getting a facial ID off a visible crew member, or them claiming to be a ship of another class that happened to be in your databanks, you're not likely to catch them in a lie.

In matters like this, wasn't the Solarian League the neutral arbitrator in the past, in situations such as this, if something had gone down, and needed to be adjudicated?

Who will substitute for the League in this fashion now?

I'm not sure there was an adjudicator for that particular treaty. Conflicts would just end up with interstellar disputes, to be settled by negotiation, appeasement, stern warnings, war, or whatever.
