That would be ok, if Honor wasn't floating at least in one of the pool scenes in SVW - right before Nimitz bombarded her with tennis balls.

Nope Honor was floating on her back with her toes hooked on a ladder rung.

Treading water with one's hands is a water polo trick. If her legs are supported, then the air in her lungs and a back and forth motion with her hands could keep her floating. Unless Honor can float without additional effort.

I can do that. With a bit of sculling with my hands as necessary. If I unhook my toes I do a slow "Titanic," sinking feet first and slowly rolling over into a "dead man's float" for as long as I can hold my breath.

Also, a heavy exhale will result in a slow head-first dive to the bottom.

I cannot float on my back without the feet supported because my lung capacity is only enough to float my upper torso without sculling or treading water.

Yes.

I would like to add that density and weight of bone is but one factor in determining the ability to float:

The size of one's lungs matter. Each liter of air gives about 1 kg of buoyancy.

This also means that simply by keeping more air in the lungs (not exhaling completely) also adds buoyancy. As any diver knows.
