Why does Honor have to be a 50/50 mix? Nowhere in the books does it say that. Genetics aen't that simple, she could be easily 90% Euro or even 99%. With all the genetic blending and tinkering in the Honorverse just about anything is possible, so just about any actress can play her.

The other characters "don't matter" in the big-picture casting sense. This is the "Honor Harrington" movie, so the title character is the one who is most important. Sure if you can some recognizable names for the other characters that would be great, but overall they're just supporting roles or evem bit roles.

You're completely missing the point. Finding reasons for a non-white character to be played by a white actress erases the fact that Honor isn't white, and there's little enough minority representation in science fiction as it is. Taking that representation away is wrong. Full stop.

And while this is indeed the Honor Harrington movie, the other characters do matter. They matter very much indeed. I'd say Benjamin Mayhew has a fairly sizable impact on events, don't you? So does Thomas Theisman. And Queen Elizabeth III. Honor may be the title character, but that doesn't make any of the others unimportant. Particularly if Honor is played by an unknown - the big names will be even more critical among the supporting players then.

It's roughly one double spaced page of 10 point courier per minute of script, which amounts to 250 words per minute. HotQ is 132,588 words long, so to do every scene in the book would take a mere 530 minutes. So the book is going to be RUTHLESSLY cut and less than 25% of the book is going to appear in the movie.

We have a really short scene with Allison in the book, which is unlikely to make it into the movie. Then she doesn't show up on-scene until "In enemy Hands". Which is kind of unlikely to ever be made into a move given how things work, and even if it does the scene with Allison probably won't appear.

So if it's inconvenient to limit the search of actresses then I wouldn't expect the casting people to limit it. I personally don't care. There are a lot more important thing to focus on. If the best fitting actress that they can afford is black or white or whatever, I don't care.

In my opinion the only people in the books where appearance is significant and needs to respected is the Manticoran royal family. Who also doesn't seem to show up in this book, so that can be worried about if and when it matters.

I repeat:

It's called whitewashing, and it's racism.

So really, there is a far larger pool of actresses to choose from for Honor. You need a big name, regardless of what she looks like. The eyes can be changed with makeup and/or prosthetics/CGI. Age doesn't matter either, that also can be dealt with, and I think the whole prolong issue should be greatly modified or dumped altogether anyway.

Yeah... then she would look as much half-asian as Sean Connery looked Japanese in whichever Bond film that was where he was disguised as Japanese. Fooled everyone, too, apparently

Edit: Sorry 61Cygni... that came across as picking on you, and that wasn't what I meany. I was making fun of the silliness that was that Bond film, and your comment about using makeup to make a white actress look asian, just made me think about that.

Also, while I think Jennifer Lawrence could pull it off, I don't think Evergreen could afford her. It's one thing to have a name actor, it's something else completely when you have to *pay* for the name. Same goes with Scarlet - too expensive.

I think Cobie Smulders was mentioned awhile back. She was pretty good in The Avengers, although I think she might be pushing it on age (she'll be 32 in April) - then again, maybe not. I'm not insisting that whoever plays Honor should look 18, but whoever it is should be fairly young.

'Course, I'm 49, so anybody under 40 looks young to me.

Here's another thing to consider when casting Honor.

ATM, we're seeing some pretty big Hollywood movies going out of their way to include or even add content to appeal to movie-goers in China/Asia (and their wallets).

So leaving her ethnic background intact for the movies might just be a good idea, provided you can find a good actress that looks the part.

It's a somewhat crass argument, true, but that doesn't mean it's a bad one.

I think we've had textev that post-diaspora humans are a mixture of races with varying 'colours', and that Manties are even more of a mixture. So what's the predominant 'colour' in the RMN? We know that Grayson was largely settled by mid-west Americans so the assumption has to be that most of them were 'white' with a few others. Manticorans seem more varied, from 'pure white' to 'pure black' plus everything in between. So does it really matter, apart from defined lead characters whose appearance has been described, what colours are in the cast?

Cheers

John
