I just realized something regarding Bolthole - surely some people in StateSec knew about its location and they are still alive somewhere? It would kind of make it plausible that MAlign know or will soon know its location, which means we will perhaps see an attack there, right?

No, they don't, or didn't at the time of The Yawata Strike. Albrecht as much as admitted it in his convo with Colin.

Late 4th quarter? Too late to throw Byng under the bus. Bad option at the time way worse option now. It goes from a shot in the foot to a bolt in the neck. Can't undo the Beowulf secession, Can't undo Filareta's defeat in the league citizenry, can't erase the knowlege in the verge, can't stop the MAlign's nefarious plans of their own to destroy the league. Only forestall's Maya's own break-away and gets them even better prepared for it.

Crazy plot twist, since we're going there: Honor reprises her mission to Haven, Shows up in the royal yacht this time with 8th fleet minutes behind

Joat42 may be on to something interesting. What Joat42 is proposing is that they could find out at any time from a nefarious ex State-Sec source.

I don't recall Haven ever having been compromised by Malign agents. I know that Grosclaude was nanited, but that's a horse of a different color. Nor do I recall that the Star Kingdom has been infiltrated by the MAlign. We know the Graysons are clean, they just weren't on Malign radar soon enough.

Alexis Detweiler was a Mesan citizen and the wife of Collin Detweiler.

She and their children lived near the central park in the city of Green Pines. They were, however, not close to the park when it was nuked by Seccy terrorists in 1921 PD. (HH12)

Albrecht was also married to a Mesan citizen. Did they all have Mesan wives? Their wives would have had to be brought inside the Onion if not already a part. Unless they were to be abandoned in case of Houdini.

I find it surprising in light of their mission. It seems that they'd only wish to procreate with other Alphas. Albrecht didn't procreate with his wife. Does Colin and Akexis have the same arrangement or are their kids from natural childbirth?

ONE Core world can build a military to take down the SEM. And I’m not kidding.

Yes. Given time and the willingness to make the effort. But the task would not be trivial and the core worlds are not exactly warrior cultures conditioned to the imperatives of war.

Exactly as I see it, too, Don. The main problem, any potential Core-World has to face (in my eyes, at least) is not necessarily the closing of the technological gap. That is a big gap, that needs closing, true. But by far more important is the development of a fitting mind state across the whole population.

Manticore started to change to a war footing mentality around the time Honor was born. And still, even after the first clashes with Haven, there was a big enough minority in the Manticoran House of Lords who were willing to negate the inevitability of that war. Ok, some of that may be only said for public consumption, to get as much from the queen and her government as they could (Pavel Young / declaration of war) but I'm convinced, that some of them actually spoke their mind. And that after >40 years of preparation for the war with the PRH ...

So, developing a mentality across a big enough majority of the population that supports a long time war effort - that is the game changer. If you fail in this task, you'll ultimately lose - even if you're technological in shouting range (or even better) than your adversary.

The big challenge the GA will face (after they've won against the League and the MAlign) is to preserve as much of that war footing mentality as they can for as long as possible, to be ready if a new contender wants to challenge them.

I wouldn't say that being on a mental war footing perpetually would be a good thing. It's needed when you have to defend yourself or others.

But after you've done that there comes a time for peace, making friends with your neighbors or former enemies. Otherwise you are simply setting yourself up to play conquistador, or perhaps isolating yourself like N. Korea.

Rome conquered the world of its day and in doing that sowed the seeds of its own destruction.

Becoming a garrison state isn’t good. Prussia, Nazi Germany, North Korea, and USSR are examples. Do they give you the warm fuzzies about the rest of the society?

Yes they have. In addition to creating the monstrosity of the People's Republic & then getting them to adopt that abortion of a plan, the Duquesne Plan, Nesbit found out about & the date of the proposed peace conference between Pritchard & Elizabeth & abort it with their attempted assassination of Queen Berry on Torch. That led ultimately to the resumption of hostilities and the Battles of Lovat & Manticore.

As for the Star Kingdom Lady Elaine Descroix was their most senior agent within it & they do have others as how else would they have found out about the changes to Heinrich & Stacey Hauptman's wills leaving control of Hauptman Industries to Honor.

Wait! What? Huh? Elaine Desceoix was a MAlign agent? Is there textev on that?

She is the cousin of Michael Janvier and Baron High Ridge. Which means they could be agents too? That would explain High Ridge's political actions quite well.

Are you sure about that?

I forgot about Stacy's privacy being compromised.

Only Descroix, not Janvier nor High Ridge. From At All Costs, Chapter 2:
"Fortunately, our best and highest surviving contact in Manticore wasn't in Zilwicki's files and remained in place. She wasn't really what we could consider a reliable asset—she was using us as much as we were using her, and she definitely had her own agenda—but Descroix was willing to do what she could to mitigate Manty operations against us and assist with damage control domestically in the wake of the 'Manpower Incident' in return for our financial support and the intelligence we could provide her. Unfortunately, she was completely unwilling to do the main thing we wanted out of her."
"Which was?" Sandusky prompted, as if he didn't already know the answer to his own question, when she paused.
"Which was to get rid of the damned cease-fire," Aldona said flatly.
...
"We got exactly the break with Manticore that we wanted. Unfortunately, instead of falling into Technodyne's arms, which is what we're almost certain the then current Erewhonese government would have done, left to its own devices, the Havenites and Governor Barregos managed to convince them to run straight into the arms of the Republic of Haven. Worse, Ruth Winton was right there on the spot and actually managed to get the Star Kingdom, however marginally, involved in supporting what was effectively a Havenite-planned operation against Congo. That left the two of them standing as joint sponsors of the 'Torch' régime on Verdant Vista—a relationship which seems to be surviving so far despite the fact that they're shooting at each other everywhere else. And just to make the situation even better, we have strong indications that in the course of his own contributions to generating this fiasco, Zilwicki managed to get his hands on some sort of evidence which led to the disappearance of Countess North Hollow and the destruction of the North Hollow Files, which ultimately played its own part in the fall of the High Ridge Government and Descroix's complete loss of power."
"Speaking of Descroix . . . ?" another of Detweiler's guests inquired.
"No longer a problem," Bardasano replied with a thin smile.
"Good."
"But eliminating her didn't eliminate the fallout from the entire Congo debacle," Sandusky pointed out
