I think this is the relevant quote from HAE:

She floated in zero-gee, and the surface of her brain listened attentively to everything Schubert said. She knew she'd be able to replay the entire conversation verbatim later, but for now her inner thoughts were busy with what she'd already learned about Project Trojan Horse.

It does seem like a unique ability. I know I couldn't do it without actually listening to the conversation. Maybe it's some sort of Meyerdahl byproduct?

In Terry Pratchett's book "Thud!", it is noted that Sir Samuel Vimes is a noted expert at this skill, having developed it to the point that he can offer relevant opinions without actually paying attention to what was going on!

Pierre was the father of Edward Pierre, who made a career in the People's Navy and was killed in action when his squadron of warships left hyperspace immediately in front of a Manticoran dreadnought. (HH3)

Ouch! Why the hell aren't there many more disasters, if you can't see where the hell you're going when you come out of hyper? Talk about flying blind, and sick with testicles in hand after translating. It's like rolling the dice and russian roulette.

Except space is mind bogglingly big. The change of emerging even within energy range of another ship (500,000 km) is low. The chance that you'd drop out of space the instant some other ship was physically transiting that area is even lower.

Especially since outbound ships don't have the navigational uncertainties that inbound ships do. So they probably tend to jump into hyper as soon as they get across the hyper limit. Inbound ships need to leave some safety margin to cover inertial navigation drift, so they probably aim for a bit beyond the hyper limit. So they really only have to "worry" about hitting in-system craft headed out to outer planets. And those are relatively rare. Ships headed out to the asteroid belts may be somewhat more common, but those tend to sit within the limit.

You've probably got a much higher chance of your fusion bottle spontaneously failing. *Boom* :D

Hi Cthia,

If you've read RFC's relevant posts on the treecats, while they are very intelligent in some areas, in some they aren't, like math; but suppose Raul or some other human pardner was a wiz at math and could explain it to his treecat, who in turn reported it to the memory singers? 8-)

Interesting times indeed. :lol:

I suspect RFC is among those who can track what several people are saying while they concentrate on other things, I fielded simultaneous communication conversations [radio and wire] at the battery HQ for the CO, which wasn't that hard.

This is a real Ricardo Montalban moment for me. It tasks me. No doubt it is some Meyerdahl byproduct. But to what end? I am beginning to think that the Meyerdahl mods haven't run their course. There are hidden talents just waiting intro. What degree of Honor's talent will manifest itself in her child? Will each successive gen become more capable? Grayson's treecats are an unprecedented bunch as they are the first to grow up amongst humans. I recall Nimitz' communication with Raoul moments after birth. I'm thinking of the effect an auxilliary training horse has on the star horse. Seabiscuit had a sparring partner. It serves to push and fully develop natural abilities. I cannot shake the feeling that latent talents of treecats and human interaction hasn't peaked...and as a result of human and cat interactions, that treecats may discover hidden abilities themselves.
Any snippet or post from RFC is good if not great!

But what about running into coasters, debris not yet collected, meteors, asteroids?

He would have been fine if he hadn't fired on the DN thinking it was his intended target.

The Short Victorious War
Chapter Fourteen
(snipped to essentials)
wrote:
Commander Gregory, captain of the light cruiser HMS Athena, stood by his tactical officer's shoulder and shook his head at the image on the visual display. The dreadnought Bellerophon was coming up fast from astern, overtaking Gregory's cruiser as she eased along on another long, slow leg of her patrol.

Gregory had known Bellerophon was due to rotate home, but he hadn't known she was leaving today, and she certainly made an impressive sight to break up the monotony of patrol duty.

...

* * *

"Hyper limit in thirty seconds, Admiral Pierre."

"Thank you." Pierre nodded to acknowledge the information, and the battlecruiser Selim's GQ alarm whooped once to warn her crew.

* * *

"Hyper transit! I'm reading an unidentified hyper footprint!" Athena's tac officer snapped. ...

"Bearing zero-zero-five, zero-one-one. Range one-eight-zero million klicks. Christ, Skipper! It's right on top of Bellerophon!"

* * *

"Contact! Enemy vessel bearing oh-five-three, oh-oh-six, range five-seven-four thousand kilometers!"

Pierre jerked in his command chair and twisted toward his ops officer's sudden, unanticipated report. They should be eleven light-minutes from their target! What the hell was the woman talking about?!

...

"Put us back into hyper!"

"We can't translate for another eight minutes, Sir," Selim's white-faced captain said. "The generators are still cycling."

Pierre stared at the captain, and his mind whirled like a ground-looping air car. ...

"Hard a port!" he barked. "All batteries, fire as you bear!"

* * *

...

...

"Bring us hard to port, Helm."

"Aye, aye, Sir. Coming hard to port."

The dreadnought began her turn, and fresh alarms whooped even as she swung.

"Incoming fire!" the tac officer snapped, and lasers and grasers ripped at Bellerophon's suddenly interposed sidewall. Most of them achieved absolutely nothing as the sidewall bent and degraded them, but red lights bloomed on Avshari's damage control display as half a dozen minor hits cratered her massive armor, and this time he knew exactly what to do.

"Ms. Wolversham, you are authorized to return fire!" Bellerophon's com officer barked the order straight from The Book, and Lieutenant Arlene Wolversham punched the button.

The odds are a little bit higher if you know when and where a ship (or ships) are supposed to be in their regular, predictable, patrol routes. A bit of navigational error, combined with a slight schedule adjustment, and you get to find out if the Universe will allow you to occupy the same space as your target(s). :shock:

Murphy will definitely put you in energy range of an unpredicted departure that out masses all four of your battle-cruisers.

Well, maybe. Pierre's battlecruiser was violating a Manticoran allies territory, and had an inbound vector that should have taken a while to counteract.[/quote]Opening fire made the watch stander's decision easier, but I suspect there was plenty of time to make the get the actual DN captain on the bridge and issue a demand to surrender or die. (And given the provocations that had been coming in that wouldn't be an unreasonable demand; even if it might kick of the main war - a war that was clearly coming)

That delay would give the BCs time to get out of energy range, or at least roll wedge. But they're deep enough in the DN's missile envelope that they've got no real chance to survive.

That delay might have given Pierre the four minutes his Hyper-generators needed to cycle so he could escape into Hyper and run away unscathed.

Actually SVW tells us that it would take Admiral Pierre's BCs won't be able to translate out for another eight minutes because their generators are cycling. (Larger ship's generators take longer to cycle. IIRC 4 minutes is basically the cycle time for a dispatch boat)

And in that long they'd most likely have slid across the hyper limit, so they'd have to claw around and build an outbound vector to get back across the limit. That just adds even more time. (I assume, although it wasn't stated, that they'd have carried out a fair amount of inbound velocity to help them quickly run down their target, on station millions of kms inside the hyper limit)
