Either A) hyperdrives are fairly small, still enormous on an SD, or B) hydrogen fuel storage on streak DB's was severely shrunk as all the other systems remained the same as the physical hull did not increase in volume or tonnage. Otherwise folks would be wondering why so-and-so is running around with large inefficient(expensive) DB's.

I don't have my books with me right now, but I remember one of the MAlign higher ups had a streak dispatch boat that was noticeably larger than a military DB. It was, however, about the same size as a civilian ulta luxury DB.Therefore, it went more or less unremarked.

What you are are thinking of was not a DB I believe. It was a luxury yacht. No standardized size for Ms. Annismovna's Yacht or any yacht for that matter. I was specifically referring to the MALIGN DB's using the MWHJ and Detweilers fears that if their DB's were ever boarded the gig would be up, but since their DB's were visually indistinguishable from any other DB using the MWHJ, they went undetected. This was described in ART or MoH when Detweiler got the info that Haven signed a peace treaty with Manticore and was now looking to ally itself against them. Pretty sure it was in ART.

There is nothing that said the relative size of the compartments. The fact that the space station is described as being built on an as needed basis...well, there is no telling what is next to what.

It said three destroyers in one dock, not one section with three docks.

A destroyer can infiltrate a system to scout it without risking a billion dollars worth of starship and five to ten times as many crew-members. You know, the sort of thing Destroyers are designed to do?

An SD can scout. It is more expensive to do it, but it can do the job. There is litteraly nothing that a DD can do that an SD is incapable of doing.

What part of Too big and Too expensive are you having trouble with?

A wolfhound class DD has a crew of eighty-seven. There is no SD in service with any navy anywhere that can risk that few personnel in a scouting mission. I didn't find any crew sizes for other DD classes or any SD class but the difference is enough to say that, failing the availability of a LAC squadron, there is no way to scout a system that risks fewer people or fewer dollars than a Destroyer.

It is so comforting to know that Manticore and the grand alliance knew where Adm Crandall and Adm Filareta were with all of those SDs without scouting reports and or intelligence from Beawulf. It gives me a great deal of confidence that scouts aren't needed and SLN task forces can't be encountered away from their home bases.

The obsolete missile sponge ships become inconsequential when the bases are taken out. The bases are known locations. The building centers are known locations.

Might want to turn off your sarcasm and turn on what actually counts.

Yes we do. The Wolfhound class is the only crew size I found in a quick search of HoS, but THAT number we know for sure:

That just means that a DD is a BETTER scout than an SD. It doesn't mean that an SD CAN NOT scout.

As currently practiced by the RMN, standard scouting requires the following:
0)approach system in hyperspace
1)cross hyperwall near target system limit
2)dispatch recon drones
3)recieve information from recon drones
4)if necessary, use ship sensors to investigate further
5)if possible, recover recon drones
6)cross hyperwall into hyperspace
7)return to base to report informatioin

Nothing in that list requires the use of a DD or an LAC and nothing in it excludes an SD from preforming those duties. Just because it can doesn't mean should, but conversely, just because it shouldn't doesn't mean it can't.

On the other hand, if you ask me, what is probably going to happen is they are going to upgrade ships in "fighting force" groups. They will have a couple of SDs, a CLAC, a few BCs and a bunch of CLs through DDs all come out with streak capability at about the same time. They will then group these ships into task forces and only give the force additional ships or replacements that are streak equipped. They will then assign these task forces to the fleets.

You CAN water-ski behind a cruise ship. That doesn't mean that cruise ships are suitable for towing skiers.

Any commander who goes scouting in a SD should be cashier in disgrace unless there are outstandingly pressing reasons for not detaching one of the screening ships that are always around a SD.

There are reasons why Navies build so many smaller ships and reasons why those smaller ships travel further in hyper than SDs; Those reasons generally boil down to "an SD is too big and too expensive."
