Still doesn't warrant her having a larger contingent if bodyguard (singular) than Our Miss Owens. I mean, get serious she's a Girl, a Grayson Girl, with all the lack of privileges and honors attaining. Abigail gets away with ONE because she is now in the line of succession. Benjamin's daughters are not. We have to be consistent within the rules of the Universe we are playing in.

The problem is that we don't actually know the rules. How many armsmen would Rachel need? Who knows? Well, RFC if he thinks about it.

And it would be really difficult at Academy with armsmen (or women).Talk about setting her apart. Also, this is not a high danger environment. Second, she has a treecat bodyguard. Once on a ship, she might have more guards but, note that Abigail's bodyguard does other things, she is likely to have the same kind of guard. And she does have that treecat.

Given the recent changes in Treecat status, it may well be that her treecat, Hipper, will be inducted into the Mayhew Guard as her de facto armsman (Armscat?)

Depending on Grayson reciprocity laws, Hipper is already a citizen of Harrington Steading and by extension a Grayson citizen. Remember in IEH "Katherine and Howard meet Harrington's newest citizen" shortly before Steadholder Harrington introduced the treecats.

Sorry, we do know the rules. As Steader, Honor must have 3 at all times which makes a contingent of 10, 3 per shift and one spare. All heirs must have one. The rule of female inheritance for the Keys changed at the report of Honor's death, which was after Abigail's snotty cruise.

The rules of inheritance for the Sword (Benjamin's succession) was not changed by the end of UH. Therefore Rachel is not in the succession, does not require even one bodyguard since she is still just a girl with the lack of honors and privileges attaining, any more than Our Miss Owens needed aboard HMS Gauntlet.

Yes Mateo was aboard Gauntlet, yes Mateo was with her on Refuge's surface. However he was a RM marine attached as her escort (to keep the snotty from giving away homeworld), not a member of Owens Steading Security. And only he and Abigail's father know how that transfer happened, and they're not talking.

yes not in succession for Sword but what about the Mayhew Steading which is separate from the sword?

collateral branch and well down the list? certainly but technically in the succession for it, so likely Rachel and Ben's other girls will have 1 armsman assigned just like Abby does. just the one, not a team. (I can see Benjamin using this as the excuse to further protect his kids if they are off-world or not living at home anymore)

though i do occasionally wonder why mateo doesn't have any help. sure only 1 on duty at a time but no one no matter how well trained can be on duty all the time. I would expect at least one other that they share the duty with. 12 hours on, 12 hours off.

I thought Mayhew Steading went to Michael and his children would inherit. Still, that would force Rachel to accept no more than Abigail, which is one. Since all she could inherit is Mayhew Steading anymoer tan Abigail could only inherit Owens Steading.

Since they are posted to a warship, he is not on duty 24/7. He is only on duty when she is not on the ship. I think there was some consideration for "the exigencies of duty to the Sword" in regard to shipboard duty, which is as new to Grayson as female inheritance. Otherwise, yes, there would be minimum 4 guards, 3 8 hr shifts and one for days off and personal business.

The Mayhew Steading isn't separate from the Sword. IIRC, 'Steadholder Mayhew' is a courtesy role carried by the Protector's heir. Kind of like the UK's 'Prince of Wales'.

When Bernard Raoul was born, he displaced Michael.

IIRC the Protector has a total of four Steadings as his personal demise Mayhew, Simonds, Oswald and Bancroft. Mayhew is the heir apparents title. SOB are organized a one steading as the Protectors Steading. The SOB was taken over by the Protectorship in the aftermath of the Grayson Civil War.

That being the case, then since Rachel cannot be the prince, cannot inherit the Sword, she is still just a girl. No body guard, no special privileges beyond her treecat.

Sad but true she will never be Miss Mayhew   . She will never get her very own contingent of body guards. Well, until the Keys change the policy anyway. Which IMHO will be after the second freezing of Hades.
