This would include multiple "cut out identies" for many top bad Mesan (sp?) leaders along with possible and practical colony planets way way out beyond known space for the underlings? This might include many colony ships.

For all we know as readers and fans, Mesa might already has spent years finding some remote, unknown, very suitable planets for human colonization. We might also find that Mesa already has the transport ships ready to go in hiding.

Good planets are hard and expensive to find. But ... Mesa might have that money to do so. They might already have spent hundreds of years terra forming lots of potential planets. There "bug out" plans are probably very extensive.

The text suggests that Darius is both the bolthole for top Mesan leaders and the remote, unknown, suitable planet for human colonization that you are suggesting.

Belial666 is suggesting that the Alignment should have established numerous distant colonies with a view to creating a population comparable in size to the rest of the galaxy, already committed to their cause, so that when they re-integrate with the rest of humanity they would automatically dominate the political question of genetic uplift.

I hate to say this guys, but you are missing the obvious. We already know that the Malign has NUMEROUS colonies.

Congo, AKA Torch was one, created under the guise of Manpower, inc. and friends. Thandi, off the cuff in a meeting thinks about 2-3 OTHER Manpower colonies that she know of that she could raid in her open debuts as commander of the Torch armed forces.

On top of this, the Malign have had their hands in Silensian politics for years and have a multitude of pirate and slaver bases across space.

Even though Silensia has changed ownership, there could be completely legimitate businesses and enclaves owned by the Malign ready to clandestinly do their bidding and hide any personel necessary. Many of those slaver bases are military bases in hiding and planetary breeding facilities are colonization attempts in vitro.

On top of that, we don't know the holdings of any of the other members of the RF. They could have colonization attempts or extensive mining concerns as a front for Malign activity. Mannerheim has a fair portion of their SDF guarding the Felix wormhole and the Twins - NOT Mannerheim, so Mannerheim in general must be so comfortable with their SDF patroling it's extra system properties, that no one officially cares when squadrons disappear to do the Malign's bidding.

1) Congo/Torch wasn't a "colony" it was a "mining camp" -- i.e. there was no attempt to develop beyond the minimum infrastructure to support resource extraction. The same can be said of the other enclaves you cite.

2) You have to separate the Manpower/Jessyk/et al trans-stellars which are mostly outside of the Onion and the MAlign which is the shadowy evil inside the Onion. Not everything Manpower did was part of the MAlign's "Master Plan for Universal Domination(tm)." It is noted a couple of times that Manpower (and others) engaged in some "stunts" that were actually counter to the MAlign's interests because managers were "in the know."

A mining camp with multiple millions of inhabitants, perhaps. Yes, none of the mentioned systems are a Safehold/Darius system, but Mesa/Manpower/Malign has dozens of seeds planted in the existing Galaxy it could exploit - some hidden in plain site and inculous. You don't think the Malign has an inventory list of Manpower, Jessyk, etc, holdings and would exploit it any way necessary?

Except the rushed version of Houdini didn't show much consideration for "underlings" -- something about pinging nano-bots periodically to reset the suicide timer?

I don't see it myself. These people are arrogant to the point that it doesn't occur to them that they could ultimately lose it all. So the need for them to have final escape plans doesn't come up. Even Houdini was only a tactical withdrawal.

It is interesting to compare the actions of European nations at the time after the Americas were (re) discovered. Almost all effort was expended to control Europe, (where the important things were) with operations in most American areas as conquests, not colonizations. One of the reasons North America was different is that no high value resources were obvious to be raided. It became a dumping ground for people who wanted to get out and were willing to colonize to do so. Australia had a different pattern, but also didn't have high value resources to start with. The Malign is focused on controlling what is already known, any colonization efforts would be intended to support that more directly than the suggested plan.

In spite of planning ahead for centuries, Malign has tunnel vision. It is also aiming at an extractive economy, not an inclusive one, which would strengthen the tunnel vision effect.
