But if you put the captured Admirals in charge of organising the orgy in the whorehouse they would likely bungle it.

But then you have the problem of of persuading people to set up shop on them, and as they are so obsolete, and SLN built, the ladies would probably insist on hazard pay for working in something so dangerous....

Reclarification on my part for an awkward post. Sorry. What I meant to say is that all of the old intact captured Sollie SDs are war ships...built for only one function which is to blow stuff up and kill people.
It would be much easier to just build new bottoms, (ships) designed for the specific purpose from the get go. Like already said better, war ships are very specific in their construction techniques. But....what to do with them all? For the time being, DEMILITARIZED POW accommodation hulks until ground side POW camps can be built? Then what? Expedient orbital facilities of what ever nature? Then what? If nothing else the component value could be considerable. Yep...it would take some doing to break an armored integrated large SD properly. Maybe POWs could be hired to do the job? Something that I just thought of is what about all the accompanying light Sollie captured navy units? What about all of THEM? It would be tempting to peel off some for some nasty purpose by agencies unknown. In my feeble view, the future of mankind in the Honorverse is not going to be fun and games. Very hard times they are a coming. Add to that mix the potential for many light Sollie navy units to get "reassigned". Hope this helps kinda maybe. HB of CJ (old coot) Lt.Cm. |

It isn't stated anywhere, but I suspect all of the captured SLN ships in Spindle and Manticore got the same treatment as the survivors of Byng's squadron in New Tuscany -- their computers were slagged so that they can't even move under their own power ETA Citation:

Again this isn't a problem for cruise ship setup. Personally after having the crap kicked out of you and then being told to surrender computers intact or they will finish the job while you are on board, you would leave the computers intact. Not like there are any secrets there. Your best tech is worthless.
We also know that Crandells SD's were carefully analysed, by Manticore, Haven and the Andie's. Halo II etc... 130 SD themed cruise ships, with 70 parts ships. Can easily with time be setup with beached Captains freighter Captains, Freighter crews, and some ex-patient military to act as "guides" for the 450-500,000 passengers who want to know what this whole SD ship is like. Plus all the newsies. Could also be used for semi secure personnel movements that nobody is going to raid / bother. These ships make aircraft carriers look like tiny tincans. Yet pack on the same crew numbers on board. Plus the terminus makes the travel links much faster and time on board more bearable. The Sollie SD are not bad ships, they are just totally outclassed. Everything on them is top notch. These are not derelict ships that are run by pirates. They are not WWII left over BB. They are up to date 1990's tech to our 2010's with civie refit to modern hotel shopping mall levels, modern being 2000 years from now modern. We would be astonished at how advanced they are. Heck even Honour during her first visit to Grayson would have suggested fleeing and surrender if one of these showed up. Let alone 130. ________________________________________

Skimper, it can't work. A superdreadnought has two or three fusion generators, each of which requires more crew than an entire civilian freighter. Remember when Honor used warships to carry escapees from Hades? Each ship required hundreds of crewmen just to keep them running, without even trying to man weapons or defenses. That's ten times as many crew as a freighter. And maintaining the systems is vastly more expensive than a freighter. It would be impossible to run these ships at a profit. Besides, it would take massive renovations to make the accomodations acceptable to paying customers. --------------------------------------------

The only time where we've seen a warship converted to something approaching civilian use is HMS Duke of Cromarty, and that only worked because it was based on an Agamemmnon-class BC(P), which unlike a traditional warship, has a large hollow space inside of it that can be filled with civilian accomodations.

You might be able to sell 1-2 SDs to a company specializing in new and different experiences for bored rich people. But bored rich people is a very limited market and I doubt you'd be able to re-purpose 130 of the things for that! But hey if you could even sell off 2 for that purpose that's 2 down 128 to go... |
