The League was specifically designed to prohibit the rise of a powerful central government. You can talk all you want about someone seizing the reins of power of the emergency, but the cold, hard truth is that the League as presently constructed simply does not have those kinds of levers to pull. The founders of the League absolutely did not want a strong "national" government stepping all over the historically autonomous member systems.

Any attempt to seize that control of the government is going to piss off just nigh near everyone, even those who don't like the Manties and/or Beowulf. Go reread Gweon's analysis of the situation in ART. Everyone agrees the kind of structural reform needed to fight a war simply is not going to happen.

They also didn't intend on the present situation and relationship between the League and its member states, but they got it.

<scratching head&arse> I thought most everyone was already pissed off and had been, for centuries. So what? League consistency?

The league could split into a dozen or more equal sized pieces and EACH has more industrial capability than Haven, Manticore, Beowulf and the Andies combined.

It could split into a 100 equal sized objects and EACH would have at least 300% of the manufacturing capability of Manticore.

Not all areas of the league are going to be equal to all the others. Look at the US industrial and agricultural areas. Also look at what is built where and grown. E.G. aircraft are built in WA KS TX MO CA SC and NY. or shipbuilding yards

These are not states, they are full scale star nations who have existed as industrialized worlds for hundreds of years. Which of the top 10 industrialized nations is incapable of building aircraft? Or, to suit the fact that the fundamentals of space craft operation is pretty well understood in the honorverse, which could not be building diesel locomotives in 2 years if they really wanted to?

but transport of anything has been so cheap that only the oldest core worlds have masses of industry. just about all the rest have only enough for their (limited needs) as it has been cheaper for the last couple centuries to have it built else where and then shipped to you.

much like how almost all electonics are made in china/phillipanes where they can be built for a fraction of what it would cost in the UK/US.

so even if a planet has heavy industry, it was likely mothballed long ago and time and money will need to spent before you can start using that industry to do anything let alone build ships, be they freighter or warship

Something interesting occurred to me from another thread. The Honorverse has benefit of air cars. Everyone with a license probably has access to a Toyota runabout (good mileage (hang time)). During a planetary invasion, if you own an aircar, wouldn't you want to be airborne? But surely the planet cannot afford aircars taking to the air like fireflies? How is that enforced?

Computer traffic control that can probably order the vehicle to the ground. Sort of what happened on Mobius during the white tower attack. Also IIRC air cars can be programmed to take passengers to destinations under computer control like what was supposed to happen to Stephanie Harrington when she went on her unauthorized hang glider flight in ABF.

So a planet with really good access to cheap transport shouldn't have any manufacturing industry then, right? Like say, Manticore?
