If I was back at Manhattan beach or cruising Decker Canyon Road in a rented Mini Cooper, yeah, that would work. Helas, mes choux, I am in Northern California with weather almost exactly what I left behind in Northern Oregon, chilly (low 50s high) evening rain.

Yes it is a good read. Not going to spoil the end of the book for others. BUT... leaves way more intriguing questions than it answers. Hope I live long enough for the "final book."

Shadow of Victory should have started from the end of Cauldron of Ghosts, with Michelle showing up to kick Mesa butt. Instead it begins BEFORE the battle of manticore and introduces TOO MANY new (and unnecessary) characters. If Weber has run out of ideas, he should stop writing the books. I have loved this series from the beginning, but will not be buying any more.

+1 for the above description. It's literally first time I regret buying Weber's book. Sorry to say that.

Actually while reading I had a constant "Member the battle of Manticore??? Yeeee, I member! Member operation Oyster Bay? Yeah, I member that..."

For those that are really disapointed, you should listen to the interview David Weber did on the last 3 Baen podcasts (they broke up the interview into 3 parts). I thought he did a good job explaining why the book was necessary and why what was in it was written.

Hmm, it's a little bit too long to listen for me :( Whatever were the reasons, it doesn't change the fact, that Shadow of Victory is not very enjoyable to read. And we are not alone with such impression. According to goodreads, this book is in the bottom 5 from all David Weber's books?

The interview segments are only 10 or 15 min each of the podcasts.

A very brief summary is that he needed to setup everything for the next main line book which will wrap up the story line that began in OBS. The Polish and Czech planets were to give the readers an understanding of the two most common types of oppression found on the fringe. The Damien Harahap segments were to show more of how the MAlign is manipulating perception of the SEM (change it to be perceived as a Machiavellian star nation that doesn't hesitate to screw over other star nations rather than a star nation that keeps its word). And he indicated that Indy Graham will have a lot of influence on future events.

To be honest, while it is definitely not the strongest, I agree with David Weber that it is a necessary book. It didn't feel like a slog to get through like Ashes of Victory does.

And one of the bottom David Weber novels is still a pretty good read I think.

And yet, you managed to find the time to sit down and read a however-many-pages book?

Not "fact" - opinion. I enjoyed it, and so have others here. That makes your "fact" factually incorrect.

Not so Maxx. It is a fact to him in his world and he will be alone when he goes to vote at the local bookstore by casting his vote in dollars at the register. Just as it is a fact to you in yours that it is enjoyable. There are different levels of thinking amongst humanity. They are called markets. And the thinking of each market is a fact to be considered. Not an absolute fact, but a local fact. And if his opinion is the overwhelming majority then it rules anyway. Except that it doesn't because the author's whim is law.

It is a fact that most people don't want our president elect. Though it is fact that some do. Enough so that he got elected anyway.

Fact is in the eye of the beholder—even if insane. Especially if insane because he may be wielding a gun that is trained on you. Or an army.

Told you so. Told you so. Told. You. So. Though I won't say I told you so a few posts back. :P

I appreciate that link too, Annachie. The podcast is interesting. I only completed the first one, again which was very interesting.

But the tidbit about plans to dedicate an entire novel about ground zero of Honor's inside nuclear reactor with a story about her father, tortures my taste buds. A reader can get lock-jawed from revelations like that.
