The next book, which will be the last book, in the series is targeted at April 2018, the 25th anniversary of the publication of On Basilisk Station.

Hans, that's been my question too.

JohnRoth, that's going to be to be a monster of a book to be able to conduct and conclude the full war against the SL. I mean Bible or larger in terms of pages, without glosseries and whatnot at the end. Or maps. O my gods, we need more updated maps!!
The 1st Havenite-Manticore War spanned over several books. The SL, as stated many times on here elsewhere, is significantly larger and has its own quirks that would make that war last several more books still.

And it's really 2 wars. One against the SLN and another against the MA. That surely can't be just one book.

It can if you lose.

So,are you saying SoV is the final book in the Crown of Slaves ARC, and the next one [untitled] will be the last of the HH Arc, but not necessarily the completion of the Honorverse? Or that the next one will be the last book of the honorverse?

I'd say the bulk of SoV was more the final book in the Shadows of Saganami arc, maybe 75% SoS / 25% CoS arcs. But hopefully that's drawn everything together enough that the final book will be the last of Honor Harrington's arc while also weaving in many of the threads from the other 2.

The I see it shaping up, the next book will bring the story to a reasonable stopping place, with things in a relatively stable position, but many of the long term elements unresolved.

I suspect the SL will begin to fragment, and the GA will begin the process of helping successor alliances form and making deals with them.

The MA expected to be able to position itself to play the GA against the successor to the SL, and I expect future books might address that aspect. The conflict will be the GA coalition against the Renaissance Factor/MA coalition.

I seem to recall from an interview RFC mentioned that it's entirely possible that Darius may go quite for a while as the political struggle shifts, and that the GA wont necessarily figure out easily that the Renaisssance Factor is an alignment tool.

However, that aside, if the GA spends its efforts building up the verge, and detente with the successors to the SLN, that seems workable.

Personally I expect that the next book will be big enough that it will also be broken into two books.

I just hope it's not "rushed" through just for the sake of an ending. If that's the case then it's better to leave it open.

The up side is that maybe it will free up enough time to complete the beginning of the the Harrington chronology.

I suppose it could end with Darius intact, but that just seems less likely. Darius looks to be the equivalent of at least a Core World in terms of industrial power, and it's home to some of the best technology humanity has. Leaving it alone and undiscovered would mean the MA continues as a powerful, existential threat to everyone else pretty much on day 1 past the last book. If the current fleet of MA SDs they're building get blown away to the last ship, they could still have another fleet built inside of a decade or less. Under those circumstances the series wouldn't really end at all from the perspective of the Bad Guys.

Losing Darius to GA conquest, but leaving the RF unknown as a MA entity would provide a long-term Bad Guy that couldn't really provide any kind of short-term existential threat to Our Heroes.

If Darius remains undiscovered but the remaining MA Powers that Be decide to go dark for a generation or two and build up new, more decisive tech then that could also work, but it seems less satisfying of an ending.

I agree about the feel of this book. It's more in line with the other two spin off series rather than a core Honor Harrington book. Something that makes many of us feel.... Cheated? We had expectations of continuing the main story, seeing some action, etc, since we were under the impression (As we were told before) that this would be a main line book.

It's my opinion that we will see the alliance finding the Torch worm hole's other end and dealing with Darius. We've had at least one scene where people from Houdini didn't go to Darius. I'd always wondered what happened to them when they got away without being killed by their guards.

I don't think we'll see the alliance polishing off the SL, though it will be a stage set to do so. All the pieces lined up to break the SL apart, etc. The follow on series for Honor's children could easily be them dealing with the successor states while the big bad is actually the RF as a hidden alliance.

Her children will have to deal with Grayson and the Keys, as well as getting out from under the shadow of being her children. Honor clearly casts a large shadow so they'll need to do something to distinguish themselves. We know they're not going to be the sorts to rely on her reputation. Nor will Honor give them preferential treatment when it comes to life lessons.

That is how the book ends.

Yes yes... But that was what I'd 'always wondered', past tense, before reading this. I'd hoped to see something much sooner about those people. They'd seemed to have been forgotten, both by the story and on the boards as a potential source of information a lot like Simones (sp?).

No, that is how THIS book ends. Based on your comments I don't think you've read it, so I won't say more.
