Not saying that he'd go for it, but I once considered whether a formal legal signing of a form within the forum allowing RFC to use your work in some form or fashion without danger of being sued could work. But I suppose these type things may have already been tried or just isn't worth the trouble.

Son, your mother says I have to hang you. Personally I don't think this is a capital offense. But if I don't hang you, she's gonna hang me and frankly, I'm not the one in trouble. —cthia's father. Incident in ? Axiom of Common Sense

Remember that the publisher most likely has to be in on it too, and if there exists licensing deals for movies, toys, games and such it gets even more iffy.

This link is not fanfic, it's a story I came up with for a younger sibling a couple of decades ago and which I've rediscovered and transcribed onto Word (and FPcom).
Treecats wouldn't appreciate it, though...

...would a treecat eat a mouse?
Or a hedgehog?

Don't ask your kids that question if they like the story...

I think my stance redeemed me in his eyes, since Weber has in return trolled me and mentioned me in a webcast whilst his (wonderful, beautiful and magnificent) wife let me cameo her in one of my Superman/X-men Evolution fanfics, even making a few suggestions that I gratefully incorporated.

Yeah, something like that is pretty much what i would do if i ever post any fanfic based on RFCs work ANY-where(obviously not on this forum). Clearly stating that IF he happens to see it, then he has the right to use it or not as he could ever want. At least that will get rid of the problem of legal stupidities, regardless of anything else.

Some fanfics are so bad that they seem to radiate a deluded grandeur that shows that the writer actually believes that they are so skilled that all the negative reviews are proof that the rest of the world is too retarded to understand their genius.

I hope to hell that the above statement isn't true of me...

Hardly. I may not personally like all you write, but i´ve added at least one of your fics as favs(HT), i don´t do that frivolously.

Considering some of the fanfic I've come across, I can confidently say that as long as your grammar/spelling abilities remain at (or above) the level of your posts, you wouldn't be anywhere near the lower 50%.

Hehe, yeah with all the good fanfics around, i sometimes get almost stunned at the amazing dreadfulness you can run into occasionally.
Not a great writer myself, but at least i can safely say i´m far faaar ahead of the bad ones.

The most amazing part however, is how some horribly bad writers manage to get lots of favs and favourable reviews...

Laurel K. Hamilton has made quite a career on writing porn that struggles to reach the quality of the average free internet variety. Whatever.

...who?
Any relation to Peter Hamilton?
Peter is the only Hamilton I've come across in a literary sense...
Hold on, I've just found her wikipedia page...
Oh gawd, she writes stuff similar to the sparkly vampires!

Similar question to fanfic but different: at what level is "enough tech" considered Honorverse, and when is it not? that is, the idea of going colony to cryo to multiplier's of lightspeed isn't new, fusion engines, not, grav waves, I presume not, wormholes not, but as soon as you say "grav based impellers", and Warshawski sails" obviously you've crossed a line. Same thing for "bomb pumped laser heads" and "grav lensing" crossing lines, but...

AKA I enjoy it here, but wanna "play" resulting in a community a la the Grantville Gazette, what think y'all?

All my posts are YMMV, IMHO, and welcoming polite discussion, extension, and rebuttal. This is the HonorVerse, after all

The Grantville Gazette is why I stopped reading that universe.

Bomb pumped lasers exists, it's the grav lensing that's a bit impractical. :D
