Military ships would almost certainly have multiple control runs to critical systems. However, Wayfarer was, at heart, a civilian vessel with a lot of guns bolted on. Her conversion into a Q-ship was done on a tight budget, especially in terms of time. Under those circumstances there are serious limits on what you can do to toughen up the ship.

The Faraday question, in HoE, Honor Lewis was able to contact most of the ship by "suit coms" other than the brig. It also makes sense that there's ship internal communications to find crewman X, and yeah I get that maybe some of those repeaters would get taken out by battle damage, etc. I would also argue that if Diamato was able to "paint" a target for the laser crews that had already been thrown into "local mode" trying to hit the LACs in Echoes of Honor, he didn't do it with intact control links. It wasn't by suit com, either, so either Haven can do it and Manticore can't or we have to buy a magic bunny that says "gee wasn't that only the wires to the tac computer which aims the lasers automagically from the bridge got cut". So while I'd agree that control runs involve more than just a "mifi signal", I would counter argue that Hemphill and Co.'s or their long-before predecessors would have designed in an auxilliary method for "ship internal" control methods to address those very problems. They've had two millenia since "now" to make it work, right? ---------------------

Time on station, methinks. Tschu took the time to run extra runs between the fusion rooms (which I would argue would NOT be a place to use my "Manticoran super-wifi" concept!) for communication and control/diagnosis, etc., and with a crew of 1500, I fail to see how they wouldn't have had time to "finish the job wiring up this part of the ship to super-Milspec X" WAY before Selker Rift. ---------------------

Could also be a single "leaky" antenna that runs through the ship - essentially a coax with holes in the outer shield. I've seen them in some large building installations where rather low powered radios were used. ******
RFC said "refitting a Beowulfan SD to Manticoran standards would be just as difficult as refitting a standard SLN SD to those standards. In other words, it would be cheaper and faster to build new ships." |
