Actually, there is only one (United) Kingdom, not three separate kingdoms.

That's why it rankles some folks when they hear Elizabeth II described as the "Queen of England". Anne was the last "Queen of England" and the first "Queen of Great Britain" (comprising "England", which had already subsumed Wales, and Scotland). Later, the Kingdom of Ireland was united with Great Britain into "the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland", which now has "Northern" inserted into its name with the secession of the Republic. Northern Ireland is not a Kingdom; it's a "province".

Talking about the "Queen of England" or the "English National Anthem" tends to make Irish, Scottish, Welsh (and perhaps Manx etc.) feel excluded. In the Honorverse, there may be a need to rename institutions such as the RMN and RMMC to use the word "Imperial" rather than "Royal", so as not to exclude Talbotters and Silesians (and based on the Pearls, can Matapanians be far behind?) We already have textev that the Loyalty Toast has been modified to say "Empress", so maybe it's just a matter of time, but there's also a lot of history for the "Royal" institutions that people wouldn't want to give up on.

Weird aside: my gr grandmother referenced her ancestors as 'English, Welsh and Cornish'. She never used 'British'. Why? I have no notion but she was emphatic about it, always. :? But since they'd all left for America, mostly centuries earlier, I suppose her opinions of all that are beside the point. I just always found it interesting she even separated out Cornish as a separate people.

I confess to loving Finlandia but cannot imagine it as the Manticoran national anthem.

When Britain was an Empire did they change it to God Save the Empress? For Victoria? I don't know but there may be a cue there. :)

I hope they come up with something better than The Star Spangled Banner, which is horrible to try to sing and weird as a national anthem.

To be fair, it was a poem about a war, set to the tune of an English drinking song.

I think that fits America just about right.

You may have a point, but what drunk could possibly sing that??? Actually a poem about a battle, IRRC. Ironically by SIR Francis Scott Key. IIRC

I vote for America the Beautiful but Congress ignores me.

Ok, what Ye Olde Golden Oldie may, in future centuries, become the tune for the Mantie anthem? :)

Excuse you, that is uncalled-for slander.

...also entirely accurate.

I betray my age yet again, but I imagine something vaguely like the Genovian national anthem from The Princess Diaries.

...what??

I nominate Don McLean's American Pie as our new national anthem. All 8 minutes and 34 seconds of it.

Changing the subject just a little bit, Grayson needs a national anthem also. Since Country & Western survived on Grayson and is now considered "classical music" (AoV, chapter 43), I nominate Lee Greenwood's "Proud to Be a Grayson" for the Grayson National Anthem. :D

Edited one time for clarity.

I think "God Bless the USA" is almost too American, if you get what I mean.

Hence, my nominee is Diamond Rio's "In God We Still Trust". I don't agree with the message - at least as it regards the States - but it seems to suit Grayson quite well.

As for the Talbott Quadrant - well, there's only one choice, isn't there?

It's not hard to sing as long as you pitch it right. I.e., if you're not Whitney Houston, don't try to sing it way up there. In the first line, "Oh-hoh say can you see"*, 'say' is the lowest note of the entire song. Put that at the very bottom of your range and you're good to go for the rest, even the "la-hand of the free" bit at the end.

Isaac Asimov singing 'The Star Spangled Banner': https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CXulnF3twtQ

* aka "Oh José, can you see".

Hmmm, didn't RFC say he envisioned Graysons as having a Welsh sounding accent?

How about "Men of Harlech", just substituting Grayson instead of Harlech and Welshman? :P
