Somewhat in the same situation, but with the added maturity of being 59, I feel constrained to knock a year off the other figure, as in "59, going on 18..."

I was always told you were supposed to count backwards after 30 - so technically I'm 10 going on 9 in May...

I'm 29 (30 in just a week and a half!) and I found RFC about five years back? I was feeling a dearth of actual SF in my life. I think it was Amazon recommended On Basilisk Station; I liked it but not enough to keep going until a year later while I breastfeeding (and therefore reading A LOT). I read HotQ and became completely obsessed. I think I finished the rest of the mainline novels in about a week and a half. This past year I went back and picked up all the anthologies, spin-offs, etc and did a couple massive read-throughs of the whole thing. It gets better every time.

29. I discovered it whilst looking for books to read during the night shift at work. As I stated before, I was not too interested whilst looking at the cover. However, after looking through Amazon for Elizabeth Moon's Vatta's War series (which I was reading at the time) I was recommended the series. I was intrigued, so I picked it up... then picked up the next, and the next, and the next...
I love the political element in the stories. While the ships and battles are quite cool, it's the behind-the-scenes work that facinated me. I also like how even the "worst" characters usually have what they consider good, solid reasons for doing what they do. There are very few characters which are just completely over the top and without reasoning behind their actions. |

As a fellow political junkie, I cannot say "thank you" enough for this comment. ~*~

It would be nice if those who were willing would go to
User Control Panel > Profile > Edit Profile and add their location to their sign in. It would be nice also if the newcomers voted for either/or both of the series that they read. Every time I bring this thread forward, a couple of middies add their location and vote in the poll. Then a couple of the old salts actually admit that they aren't homeless and put down their home location. So far, about 6% of the total number of registered users have voted, but it is a very high percentage of the regular posters. I realize that there are those who don't want to give even their home country, but knowing where someone is from helps at least me avoid making assumptions about the poster I am responding to. This is especially true for the politics and free range forums, but knowing someone is from a different country (or continent) shapes how I respond on all the forums. It actually changes the language I use when responding and causes me to think more about what I am saying. So please, if you can see your way clear to doing so, country of origin at least, helps keep my language appropriate. _

A recent joiner of Honorverse. Used to be a big Star Wars junkie, but they've messed it around so much recently I ended up looking for something else, came across Honorverse by complete accident browsing a bookshop looking for holiday material. Now I'm hooked - well written, with a great balance between action and politics.
Started collecting all the books now - and I've also gotten into the Ad Astra RPG stuff too. |
